Are Coed singing groups extinct?

Postby Netherrealmer » 08 Feb 2025, 00:06

Coed singing groups have become almost extinct in modern pop music. Today, every pop group is either a boy band or a girl group.

In the 1970s, we had The Mamas and the Papas, ABBA, and Boney M. In the 1980s, there was Roxette, along with Eurythmics and Miami Sound Machine.

In the 1990s, coed pop groups included Ace of Base, Aqua, and S Club 7. Moving into the early 2000s, there was A*Teens,Black Eyed Peas along with Steps and The Corrs.

In the 2010s, We had Pentatonix. Although not a traditional band, the cast of Glee also played a role in keeping coed music popular, as their soundtracks sold well.

Now, coed pop groups are nearly nonexistent. The trend has shifted entirely toward either all-male or all-female groups. However, coed presence can still be found in rock music. I Think Simon Cowell attempted with One United but its struggling.
I think we have either boy bands or girl bands these days because South Korea is the most popular source of singing groups right now and South Korea have a no-dating rule. And no-dating rule might be difficult in a band where both men and women are present, except if they are siblings.

Maybe? I'd don't listen to much pop, but there are definitely groups with both men and women in the music genres I do listen to (punk, alt rock, ska).

Thinking about pop- a lot of what was at the top of the Spotify chart last year was solo artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan so I suppose there's just more of that than groups. There are a couple of groups/duos that did well in the past year with both men and women though: Måneskin, Belle and Sebastian and Sylvan Esso. Not many, but there could be some I don't know about since it's not really my thing.

I am not much into this kind of music. My daughters are big fan of Korean bands and I too enjoy their music. They have wonderful voices and the music touches me beyond the language. Recently, I posed the same question to my daughter and I was surprised at the no dating rule. It would be good to have a coed singing group.

The closest thing we have to coed now is when a male solo singer duets with a female solo singer. But yeah coed singing group are a dying kind.

If some break this trend and come up with a coed singing group at present, they would get the instant popularity. And the way they market themselves will be important. Maybe audience is looking for a change here and they would welcome such coed groups. Why did they started dying? Were they not liked so much?

I think Korea dominated when it comes to singing group is the reason. Coed singing groups has always been a part of the music industry since the 1950s. But South Korea music industry has a no dating law. And basically a coed singing group is a disaster for South Korea because they do not want boys and girls together because of the no dating rule. And a coed group might be risky for the concept of no dating rule unless that singing group is composed of siblings.

It's true that coed groups have been lost in modern pop music. In the past, we had classics like ABBA, The Mamas and the Papas, and Boney M. Then in the 80s, we had Roxette, Eurythmics, and Miami Sound Machine. In the 90s, we had Ace of Base, Aqua, and S Club 7. In the early 2000s, we heard Black Eyed Peas, Steps, and The Corrs. Also, A*Teens. In the 2010s, Pentatonix, and even the Glee soundtrack kept the coed vibe alive. But now, the trend has completely changed. Everything is either a boy band or a girl group. South Korea has become a powerhouse of groups, and their no dating rule makes it difficult to put men and women together unless they are siblings. That's why coed pop is dead like a crow crying in the night.

It does seem to be fading away. I also wonder if boy bands are also a thing of the past? I tend to listen to various types of genres but mainly old music, so I've kinda fallen behind music trends. I've tried to listen to Billie Eillish and found her music distinctly strange
