Coed singing groups have become almost extinct in modern pop music. Today, every pop group is either a boy band or a girl group.
In the 1970s, we had The Mamas and the Papas, ABBA, and Boney M. In the 1980s, there was Roxette, along with Eurythmics and Miami Sound Machine.
In the 1990s, coed pop groups included Ace of Base, Aqua, and S Club 7. Moving into the early 2000s, there was A*Teens,Black Eyed Peas along with Steps and The Corrs.
In the 2010s, We had Pentatonix. Although not a traditional band, the cast of Glee also played a role in keeping coed music popular, as their soundtracks sold well.
Now, coed pop groups are nearly nonexistent. The trend has shifted entirely toward either all-male or all-female groups. However, coed presence can still be found in rock music. I Think Simon Cowell attempted with One United but its struggling.
I think we have either boy bands or girl bands these days because South Korea is the most popular source of singing groups right now and South Korea have a no-dating rule. And no-dating rule might be difficult in a band where both men and women are present, except if they are siblings.
