Food and Drink : Recipe Sharing for Barbecue Lovers

Postby cmoneyspinner » 27 Jul 2017, 18:48

My husband is on a restricted diet, so lots of food I would love to eat, I avoid so as not to tempt him. Nevertheless, just because I can't enjoy it doesn't mean others should suffer!

There are two particular foods that I know most people all around the world enjoy. Pizza and barbecue!! A couple of these wonderful recipes came to me via eMail. If you're vegan or vegetarian, no worries. Threw in a recipe for you too! I love recipe sharing. Let me know if your try them or if you've already tried them! If you want to share other recipes, feel free!

What kind of food restrictions is your husband dealing with? We're doing Whole30 over here right now, so cooking has gotten creative.

These look really good to me:

Oh, no! All of my recipes contained pork!

I'm sure the 5-spice ribs would work well with beef ribs too. You could even do chicken kabobs.

I no longer go for recipes that are time consuming. I have been there and done that a lot in the good old day.s But I am sure many here would grab what you have suggested.

This thread is making me hungry.

We can't have barbecue without BBQ sauce, now can we?

Here's a recipe to try: https://www.diynatural.com/homemade-bbq ... pe-basics/

I've tried a few, but many start with ketchup. This one doesn't.

* * But of course! Don't you see the one above for jackfruit? Although that's not a veggie. It's a fruit. But most cooks know that whatever meat dishes you make can be easily converted to a veggie dish.

The BBQ sauce recipe above looks delicious, but it still has too many ingredients that I can't have right now (brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, etc). Here's one that doesn't have any added sugar except for what's naturally occurring in applesauce and balsamic vinegar.

One change I'd make is using smoked paprika instead of regular.

Oh, thanks for this. While I like the sugary ones, I sure don't need them. I'll definitely give yours a try.

Thanks for the tip about the smoked paprika as well. It's definitely better. It works nicely when making dry rub for grilled meats too.

Yeah, I like to use smoked paprika in just about anything that calls for regular paprika. However in the BBQ sauce, it's especially important to have that subtle smoky flavor, just like you would in your standard store bought BBQ sauce. I think that's what the chipotle powder is trying to add, and using the smoked paprika will give you that without adding extra heat.

This is not necessarily a BBQ thing, but something I can't imagine not having when I cook burgers on the grill -- KETCHUP! Unfortunately I can't really have most manufactured ketchups right now either, as almost every single one contains sugar or corn syrup. There are a few expensive unsweetened ones out there, but we haven't liked the one that I bought (it reminded me of seasoned tomato paste).

I made this ketchup recipe today, and I think it works! It definitely has the right mouthfeel. I didn't have any white wine vinegar on hand, so I used apple cider vinegar instead.

I used the full amount of dates but probably could have gotten away with less. It made about a quart of ketchup. I'm thinking about making more of this and putting it in the Heinz bottle to see if the kids notice. They go through a lot of ketchup!
