Email and privacy

Postby raaman » 10 Jul 2017, 07:52

Recently when I joined a site, in the email I received to confirm my email it read/said "To protect your privacy, please confirm your email address by clicking here:". I was surprised and wondering how can confirming our email ad can protect our privacy.

No idea how come email confirmation is going to protect the privacy. In fact they will be sending ads through verified mail. It's confusing how some companies write their headlines and content.

The only way I can think is to make sure that you entered your email correctly incase you mistyped it and gave a misspelling that is actually a real active email address. This would then allow that account holder to reset the password and login to your account.

Usually email verification is used for anti-fraud/spam reasons.

I agree with CF's assessment. I think the words "To protect your privacy, please confirm your email address by clicking here:" might be a slight exaggeration. Raaman, I have never received a message like that before and if I did, I would be surprised too.

That is what I also fail to understand that too when so many fellows are constantly sending all the spam(uninvited messages). And if they are sending ads through verified email, it is nothing but a clear breach of privacy. I would say.

Yeah, I come across this sometimes as well. What I do actually, is I have two gmail accounts. One is a personal one and the other I give out to the public. This way, I protect my privacy :)

There is no privacy online. Don't share what you don't want to be known.
Simple and quick solution.

Obviously you wouldn't click the link, if it wasn't you who submitted your email to the website in question. Websites will sometimes do that in order to prevent other people from entering your email into their database. For example, someone who knows your email address could sign you up for lots of undesirable content and newsletters if they wished. A check like the one above, would stop you from getting content / newsletters that you didn't actually sign up for.

Actually, it is not safe to click on some email confirmation links which we are not sure because they will 100% contains a malware or a virus or something else which by clicking on it, will trigger to get implanted into our system. The only thing I don't like Google is about there is no privacy in protecting our searches and online activity. So I will never click on any link that I feel suspicious or I am not aware of. It is better to be safe than sorry :)

I very well understand that. But in what way will it protect or safeguard my privacy? And the funny thing is that's the first time an email came like that when I joined that site.

I don't think they actually care about protecting your privacy. You know they will begin spamming you.

There is no privacy online any more. They rifle through your online activity including your emails looking for info to target more ads to you. It's like someone going through the papers on your desk. We'd be upset if someone walked into our house and did this, but many people seem okay with the "virtual" version of this.

It is not only you. Many people do not like Google for various reasons and its a wonder that so far no one (technology behemoths) had taken on Google seriously.

If left for me to say. I will say that the site is fake, because there is no way confirming your email address privatises ur email account. Unless they have another thing in mind on why they said so.

Yep. You search for something, then land on a website which has google ads that target what you just finished searching for. Ebay and Amazon both do the same thing when you're on/using Facebook.

It's basically how they operate and there is nothing one can do about it. Well all experience that.
