I wouldn't say it makes a forum "last longer", however; I feel that it could help boost your forums activity a bit, assuming members are actually posting in it.

Agreed... It won't encourage users to keep coming back but it will encourage them to post a little bit more and create a slightly closer community as the members will get to know each other a bit better.

All this thread does in increase some postcount in your forum stats, also can be good for building interactions between the members on an active forum.

You will have to watch for this though. While it may be a good idea to add one of these to your forum, so it can boost your activity a little, there is 1 downfall to it. I have seen many forums adding this and in the end, the members posted more in that thread/topic than anywhere else.

Just make sure to keep discussion flowing in the other categories at the same time.

I actually agree with both points, really. In all honesty, I myself just prefer a simple General Discussion thread more than anything. This would help keep discussion flowing rather than having people coming in and saying "Hi" and "Bye" all the time.

Nah, it really won't do anything for your activity. I've seen forums where only like 2 of the users post on it regularly. Once you get big, it could increase activity if you are trying to make the post will be really long. But that will happen after you already have plenty of activity, so although it's nice, it really does nothing for forum activity I think.
