Starting a business with a partner?

Postby lludawg » 05 Sep 2014, 23:59

Would you start a business with a partner? Yes, this will save you money, but maybe you will have arguments. I would prefer to start a business myself so I have complete control.

I agree that starting a business with partners would save lots of money (and time). However, I would prefer starting a business myself. I would have complete control on how to expand the business and such.

Hi Friend,

It is better not to start business or not to start business with partner. There are lot of complications having a partner in the business. If you have confidence on winning in business then start the business solo.

Partnerships can be very difficult and lots of partnerships do break down. The main advantage of forming a partnership is that you get to work with someone who has skills you don't have. Hence, when going into partnership it is often better to have a partner who is quite different to you. Yet many people go into partnership with someone who has a similar personality and skills to themselves.

For anyone that does go into partnership it is very important to write and agree on a partnership agreement. I previously wrote a short article on "What should be in a business partnership agreement!" which you may find useful if you are going into a partnership.

If its someone that your really close to then starting a business with your partner is great, but if its just a friend or wife/husband you can end up having arguments and ruin your friendship.

Well to be honest it depends on how you want to approach it. If you look at the arguments as constructive and approach it more like a debate rather than getting all flustered and angered by it ofcourse you will end up being on bad terms. I am currently working on a project for which I will be partnering up with 3 of my best mates. It will be difficult I understand but we all have the passion for it and we all bring different skills to the table.

We will argue, then we will go to a bar get a few drinks and debate the points from another perspective. It all boils down to how much trust and faith you have in your partner.

Can you please say why it's true. A really short post like that, doesn't provide information or an opinion to our members.

holderhost LTD is a partnership (well technically it's a company with two shareholders). I really value Plato's input and hopefully he also values mine. I personally feel that holderhost wouldn't be where it is today without the partnership that we initiated. I ran holderhost by myself originally and I think I managed less than a handful of clients. We both have different skill sets. I do a lot of the financials, marketing and customer service. Plato manages the website, takes care of a number of technical things and does his share of customer service too. We could each do the others roles but we are focused on the things we are good at which saves a lot of time. :)

Thanks for sharing your real world experience with us Sam. That is an excellent example of how a partnership can work for the benefit of both parties and for the business.

I actually advise against this. Most partnerships tend to dissolve as most folks don't seem to be able to get along when money starts getting involved in relationships. Preferably, pursue a small and easy-manageable business by yourself and avoid the hassles that partnerships bring to the table - they are almost, always problematic.

In my case I think it depends on how do partners work out the business, trust is really needed in partnership, and its important that you know your partner better, I have a small business with my best friend as my partner and so far its doing well for 4 years now, but of-course the privilege of having your own business alone is different.

Agree with you. I would love to raise business alone than with partner. There is no perfect in relationship as business partnership. We can't control some time that we encounter misunderstandings that lead to arguments.

I think that there are advantages and there are disadvantages. In partnership, you are not alone in making decisions. They say two brains are better than one right? I think that partnership lets you have a diverse thinking and allows you to open up your mind to other people's opinion. There will be arguments and misunderstandings along the way but if you two are partnering to focus on one goal then you will be successful together.

There are legal and mutual agreement such as having percentage in the company/business you are putting up so you can be safe if you have doubts with your partner.

I managed to open three small businesses in the past. It is not easy doing it alone I even had sleepless nights thinking about payroll, rent, making a profit and all. I bring in friends to become partners especially those who possess the skills that I lack. Business is going great until there was theft and mismanagement by my so-called friends. How can you fire someone close? Might as well declare bankruptcy and leave

It's too risky for me. Nowadays, even your best buddy or best friend would betray you. I mean, the only person you can trust these days is only yourself.

If you can do a business alone by yourself. its better off that way, partnership form of business doesn't really go long and end up ruining good relationship between the partners.
