India gets more Cheetahs from Botswana for Cheetah relocation project-Project Cheetah

Postby ptrikha21 » 14 Nov 2025, 13:58

Botswana has formally handed over eight cheetahs to India, marking the next significant phase of Project Cheetah, India's ambitious initiative to reintroduce the species decades after its local extinction.
The handover took place at the Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Botswana during President Droupadi Murmu’s state visit.
This gesture of biodiversity cooperation saw President Murmu and her Botswana counterpart, President Duma Gideon Boko, witnessing the release of two of the captured big cats into a quarantine enclosure.
The eight cheetahs, sourced from the Ghanzi region, will remain under quarantine in Botswana before being flown to India to join their counterparts at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.
Now it remains to be seen how well these new additions do.

In some of the earlier cases, news came out of a few deaths and other issues.
This movement would be highly observed.

Simply freeing cheetahs on a forest will not really bring back their population. Because first, there is a genetic problem with cheetahs. Almost every single surviving cheetahs right now are cousins. So they have to do some genetic modification or even clone some cheetahs who died many years ago. So they can diversify the genes of the cheetahs they will release. Another problem is cheetahs are one of the friendliest wild cats. And they are one of the wild cats that humans can defeat even without a weapon. They're not as dangerous as they look like. They also meow instead of roar. So the place where they have to free them has to be very away from humans. Because these cats are very curious.

The overall implementation is tricky. Indian authorities have tried to keep a separate, tracked and demarcated area.
Bigger problem has been the cheetahs adapting to conditions in India, which are similar but have fine differences with what they have in Africa.
I am not sure how the Genetic diversity can be achieved.
So let us see how the things go in the future.

They can have genetic diversity by getting cheetahs of the same species from other countries. The other one is trying to make clones or gene-edit baby cheetahs using the DNA of cheetahs that died hundreds of years ago, you know, the one from museums. They can provide a diversity of genetics so the cheetahs will not be close cousins.

The story of Botswana and India is completely different. The cheetahs being transported is like bringing history back into the jungle. India had lost the species a long time ago. Now they are starting a fresh cheetah project. It is a big deal for conservation and trust. Botswana has shown clear support for global partnerships like these that keep nature strong and restore balance to the ecosystem. This move is an example of overcoming the challenges of extinction without drama.

Basically, the cheetahs that used to live in India are the Asiatic cheetahs and they got extinct in India but they used to be common in India and Iran and they're critically endangered in Iran, but they're not endangered in Botswana. The cheetahs in Botswana are obviously African cheetahs. They are a completely different species. The cheetahs that they should have used to populate in India are the Asiatic cheetahs, but the problem is they are on the edge of extinction in Iran. So they thought that using African cheetahs will be an alternative, but India and Africa have different climates and temperatures.

Indian and African weathers are topologies are different but in some ways similar as well.
So the African Cheetahs would find it difficulty to adapt but over a period of time, they would evolve and make their home.
It would take time though.

From what I know, originally they wanted Asiatic cheetahs from Iran because it's the same species from the one in India that got extinct. But the problem is, the cheetahs from Iran are endangered themselves and close to extinction. So they would rather keep their cheetahs for themselves.
