It is sad that when such a decision is taken the family frowns upon it

WOW! Not charged?
We have nursing homes, and most of the time, all I hear about are the elderly being taken advantage of and not cared for properly.

It's all about attitude.
Americans don't really cherish their elderly. If you're old, you're disposable, so hurry up and die!

That sounds cruel, but that's what I've seen and heard.

I'll add that I am blessed. My kids care about me. <3

Sadly Americans do not believe in saving but just spend and therefore they will have nothing to leave behind either for family or society :D

I am not trying to re-steer the discussion.
It's not exactly on topic, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

I found this on X.
As a parent, I can honestly say that the thought never occurred to me to disinherit my children because we don't agree on politics. Political leaders come and go, but your family is still your family.

It could also flip. Suppose the kids are not supporting the parents because of political ideologies?

There could lot of reasons children aren't supporting their parents.
I'm not saying they're right. But it is a "touching point".

(I'm just thinking. Y'all don't have to go there.)

There are many reasons and one is when children are doing extremely well and do not spend time with their parents and in such cases disinheriting seems fair.

In my own country, it is the family that can help seniors. Most pay a professional caretaker to take care of their aged parents.

That is in practice even in our country.

When young people leave for better opportunities, it definitely puts a huge strain on the seniors left behind.

Just a side note. Not trying to convert you. But it's a real-life application.

In the Jewish religion caring for your elderly parents was part of the religion.
Giving offerings to the temple was also part of the religion.

Jesus pointed out that adult children were trying to “work around” taking care of their parents by saying that after they gave the money to the temple, they didn't have enough left to take care of themselves AND their parents. The criticism was that they were trying to skirt a command. The gift to the temple was pretentious act of “Devotion and gratitude” to God. They just didn't want to take of their parents.
Matthew 23:16–19

Bottom line:
Commandment or not … kids shouldn't have to be told to take care of their parents if they need help.

Although the fact that some parents are not being cared for is usually because they never cared for their children.

You picked an interesting topic.

Giving to the temple is called tithing and one is expected to dole out 10% of their earnings and this rule is hardly followed.

Tithing does not mean your responsibiliyt to care for your parents ceases. It is rare that parents do not care for their children. They have brought them into the world and surely have taken care of them although may be later they have neglected them. I have not come across any who have neglected their children.

Yeah. That was the point Jesus made. Some people were using it as an excuse, but they had no excuse.
