Movies and shows encouraging tourism...

Postby arunima » 22 Jul 2025, 06:52

Bali is a beautiful place and it was always so. But then, the movie,"Eat, Pray and Love" starring Julia Roberts made it a favorite destination for holidays globally. Bali's tourism increased many folds post the movie. In fact many jokingly said that Julia Roberts should get her rightful cut from the tourism department of Indonesia. The Pangong Tso Lake in Ladakh got tourists flocking to it after the Bollywood movie " 3 Idiots". Same thing happened to Goa tourism after the hit movie " Dil Chahta Hai". And the trend goes...
The latest to join the list is a swiss village that has become a tourist hotspot after the Korean series " Crash Landing on You" in 2019. Tourists from all over the world are flocking in and paying to take photos on the pier at Lake Brienz in Iseltwald, Switzerland.
Do you have more to add to the list?
Seems like the shoot places in the movie have a key role in promoting the tourism.

I've always wanted to visit the old Star Wars sets in Tunisia, and lots of people go to New Zealand to see 'Hobbiton'.

In Australia tourists come from all over the world coming to see the locations from Mad Max.

Personally I have visited the pub from the start of Crocodile Dundee, although I didn't go there because of that, it was just one of the few places to stay along the road in the middle of nowhere.

Re. Bali though, it's had its share of raucous foreign tourists for years. It's been a VERY popular holiday destination for Australians for a long time because it's relatively close by and cheap. I guess this movie means there will be more people from other countries as well.

I haven't watched this movie yet, what's the movie about? Am guessing it's a romance movie due to it's name

Are you talking about Eat, Pray and Love? You can call it romantic, but it's actually a journey of self discovery of a girl in the beautiful island of Bali. It's a very popular movie.

That's interesting to know. I had read about it somewhere but was not sure if that's authentic news.

Lord of the Rings made New Zealand even more popular. Movies really help boost tourism by making people want to visit the famous places they see on screen.

I knew a German girl who was obsessed with that show (she was 4, I was her nanny). I can still remember the theme song because she used to sing it all the time.

In fact, Lord of the Rings completely changed the face of New Zealand tourism. Many people were attracted by the beautiful scenery used in the film, such as mountains, forests and incredible valleys. It seemed like a dream world.

After the film, tourists from all over the world began to flock to visit the places. The New Zealand government used the opportunity to promote its attractions more vigorously. I would also like to visit Hobbiton one day, it is a very unique place.

The film not only brought fame but also jobs and economic development. Ordinary people benefited through tourism. This shows that art can change the lives of people and the entire country.

I've been to Hobbiton it's very cool.

I love the real life documentaries with people like Michael Palin or Joanna Lumley. They do really cool shows.

Hobbiton is a dreamlike place—like stepping straight into a movie! It must have been magical to walk through those underground halls and see the landscape of the Shire with your own eyes. And about Michael Palin and Joanna Lumley, you’re absolutely right—their documentaries have a real soul, not just showing places but telling the stories of people and cultures in a fascinating and human way. Palin has the calm of an old traveler, while Lumley brings a unique warmth and compassion. They’re the kind of shows that leave you wanting to travel or learn more. Is there a documentary of theirs that you particularly like?

It is true that Bali was a tourist gem even before but the movie *Eat Pray Love* by Julia Roberts put a huge spotlight on the whole world. After that movie many people were attracted by the vibe of spiritual retreat, clean beaches and culture of Bali Tourism increased many times and became a dream destination for holiday seekers globally. This is an example of the power of media to turn an ordinary place into a global hotspot.
