Do computer users still need to install antivirus software today?

Postby kat82 » 10 Sep 2025, 13:56

Modern systems have built-in security. Some say extra antivirus is a waste. Do you think it is still necessary?

I have Windows 10 and it has lots of security built in. Not sure if I really need it but I also use Bitdefender. I use a paid version, so would be happy if someone gave evidence that Windows is enough without it.

The built-in protection Windows have because a lot of antiviruses out there are annoying. For example, Avira slows down the games I play and sometimes they will accuse the game I play as virus. AVG consumes a lot of data so I stop using it.

Though most people just make use of the built in one, but there are tons of people who still install external ones.

I feel like the one that comes with the computer isn't enough. It provides very basic protection. I'd rather pay for a separate antivirus just for peace of mind.

Talk about it. Kaspersky made me reinstall windows after the machine took hours without booting. Most antiviruses tend to slow machines and will ask for updates like nothing.

I also use the inbuilt windows defender. And I rarely use external disks like flashes.
