Re: Why Netflix Why?

Well, the US is a land of immigrants. And they would find people of any culture and ethnicity there. They could have gone with the original casting in the anime. Maybe they targeted the US audience. Despite all the ethnicity there in the US, it is still dominated by the white people.

You dont have to be white or black to get the American Market. Asian Americans exist

Yes, but they're a smaller market.

I read a piece talking about 'Bet' being a loose adaptation and not a real adaptation. Though they have tried to keep the setting of High School gambling same as the original, they have gone creative with the characters and even changed the race and ethnicity. It is a Canadian production. Simon Barry is the show runner.

In the age of globalization, America is a multicultural nation—people of all races, languages, and histories. So when it fails to honor the origins of a work of art like anime by using native actors, questions arise. Netflix often chooses actors based on its core market—and often, that is the American market.

But does that justify ignoring true representation? When stories come from Asia or Africa, and European actors are given the opportunity, we lose the original flavor and cultural message. While America is a diverse country, the entertainment industry is still biased—and that leaves a representation gap.

Viewers are increasingly vocal, demanding authenticity and respect for culture. Netflix and other platforms need to listen. Representation isn’t just about look. It’s about stories, heritage, and respect for the source.
