Do You BS?

Postby Spontaneo » 30 May 2025, 22:35

When you were in school. did you ever "BS" your way through an essay or a research paper?

I took my writing seriously then and still do now. How about you?

I would like to know your answers though.

School was always easy for me. I rarely had any difficulty in any class. High grades were normal. I didn't particularly need to BS my way through, but there was one particular time I recall a major BS Session.

My senior year in English class ... the teacher gave us an assignment in September, the results had to be turned in during May, and the grade was considered half the grade for the entire school year. Fail that assignment and you would fail that class.

We had to choose a book from the library that had at least 1000 pages. The assignment was to do a detailed book report along with all the index cards, footnotes and summaries related to each chapter. It was pretty involved and required a lot of detail work.

For whatever reason, I just did not feel like even looking at it for nearly the entire school year. It got down to the last Friday in May, and the report had to be turned in the following Monday. I had not yet even started, not even opened the stupid book.

I was finally a little nervous about it, but opened the book Saturday morning to get rolling. I was pleasantly surprised to find a table of contents that included a brief paragraph that described the essence of each chapter. I never went beyond reading the table of contents to write my entire report and got it done within 24 hours. No problem turning it in Monday morning. Complete BS. I had never read the book but managed to fluff up the paragraphs from the table of contents to make it look real.

Got a B+ and breezed through to graduation.

Unreal! Good for you! Now I need your opinion....

In high school, they stuck you either in home economcs or concert band. My loved ones never taught myself how to cook and if any girl needed to know home economics in order to cook this girl did! However, the school stuck myself in concert band. A loved one gave myself an e flat alto sax. I was always first chair sax and got straight A's.

@OldGuy, did you ever play an instrument?

I never actually excelled in any musical instrument. However, I tried several instruments during my childhood years. Just none of them grabbed my attention enough to stick with them.

During high school, one of my older brothers who played the piano had a particular tune he would practice every time he came home on break from college. For some silly reason, I got it in my head that while he was back at college, I would try to learn that tune myself. I practiced it daily. As I looked at the sheet music, it took me quite a bit of time to study and figure out which note came next, note by note. I memorized it as I went along and finally got to the end of the third page.

I practiced and memorized the whole thing while he was away. When he finally came home on Christmas break, he sat down to again work on learning it. After he played for awhile, he finally got up and wandered away to watch some TV. That was when I went in, sat down and played the whole thing, which of course brought him back to watch in amazement. I guess it amazed most of the family because I ended up playing it hundreds of times to entertain on request by multiple relatives.

It was the only tune I ever actually learned to play. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Like I had mentioned, I do not BS my way through articles. Recently, I worked hard on 2 articles for WN. The articles were declined. I was told that I had already written 2 similar articles! Unreal. How could I have been so stupid? I was careful.

Right now, I am having difficulty coming up with topics for WN.

Could you review some other types of books, like novels? That's an easy way to come up with a topic, it's unique as long as you don't review the same book twice. Same with movies or TV shows.

Yeah sometimes. I remember for uni, towards the end of my degree there was one subject I really didn't care about. It was mandatory, but not really relevant for the job I wanted. So for my assignments there were a lot of filler words and fluff. I still passed it and now I never have to do it again.

Books do not interest myself other than cookbooks. So, I am writing articles.

I guess maybe it doesn't count as properly BSing my way through it, but when writing essays I definitely used a TON of filler words whenever I could to boost the word count haha. Also using excessively lengthy versions of words to make it sound more impressive too
