Hells Kitchen

Postby mrki444 » 23 Apr 2025, 20:20

A cooking show concept that features a strict and rude chef and novice chefs. They work in a restaurant, but the head chef can be very strict, often insulting the chefs and even throwing their food away.

Many people think that this concept is outdated because strictness and insulting colleagues at work is not enforced. Such behavior causes unnecessary stress for employees.
What do you think about this show concept?

A lot of contestants here became huge Youtube stars with their cooking channels. You dont need to win you just need to survive multiple episodes

I agree. But quite frankly, I didn't like the show. I watched Iron Chef and a lot of other cooking shows. The guy yelled so much, I lost interest in the food.

I agree. In some shows they just yell for everything and it more who will make better insult. Not help or give any reasonable reason for food. But I guess show have different plans.

That's Gordon Ramsay. The show Hell's Kitchen has been around since 2005. I don't like the glamorisation of workplace bullying. I have enjoyed one of his other shows though, Kitchen Nightmares. That one is him going to unsuccessful restaurants and helping them to improve.

Having waited tables during my uni days, I saw a lot of Gordon Ramsay's conduct behind the scenes. Whenever we'd get our orders wrong, there'd be flying plates and God knows what else. Obviously diners don't see all the drama. I guess it's the nature of the job. Tempers flare and words are said but when the shift is over, it's all water under the bridge.

I saw few this shows. Not bad since he is helping with advices. He do same mistakes. Most often mistake is when chef start his restaurant. In that case chef see how much manager do stuff. Having restaurnt is not just cooking.

Bullying and glorifying shouting never helps.
I believe that there are still folks who might be interested in watching such shows.
And even if it sounds bad, their own mindset won't be much good either.

Since 2005. Isn't that amazing? It didn't gain popularity because I was a loyal viewer. But it's true that a lot of people do like this show.

Today I watched Gordon on Alaska, now he was in hell of nature. He can yell on fish on ice but nobody cares. He is not main man there.

Harsh treatment and insults can create a toxic environment rather than motivate people.

Ah, the ‘tyrant chef’ trope—it’s like Hell’s Kitchen meets The Bear’s stress spiral. 😅 While the drama definitely grabs attention (who doesn’t love a good ‘THIS RISOTTO IS GARBAGE!’ meltdown?), I get why folks think it feels outdated. Real kitchens have enough pressure without scripted abuse, and Gen Z would probably walk out mid-service.

But here’s the twist: What if the show evolved the concept? Imagine a brutally honest chef who isn’t cruel—think Gordon Ramsay’s ‘Kitchen Nightmares’ fixes, where the tough love actually helps people grow. Or make it a redemption arc: The angry chef gets therapy, learns to lead without screaming, and the kitchen thrives. Now that would be revolutionary TV.

Otherwise, it’s just trauma porn with crème brûlée. 🍮

I haven't watched many cooking shows lately. There are a bazillion cooking videos on YouTube. They pop up even when I'm not searching for them.

I don't watch cooking shows though, but the truth is not everyone can actually handle watching people shout at another person.

Exactly. Shows like these can be intense, and not everyone enjoys the drama of shouting and high pressure situations.
