Those who have a regular job with a clock to punch at arrival each day almost have to have a regular time to wake. Many use an alarm of some sort but there are others who just wake naturally out of habit. If you are not working on the clock, there may be no specific need to wake at a certain time and you can keep on snoring until the sun gets in your eyes.
Once you reach retirement, there may be no need to wake at a certain time, but years of getting up for work creates a lifelong habit of waking at that same hour. Alarms can be tossed out until you find yourself needing to get up for a doctor's appointment or something similar.
My own favorite clock on the wall at this stage of life simply shows the seven days of the week. If it is pointing to the beginning of that section, it is somewhere in the morning. If it is in the middle, I know it is somewhere around noon and when it reaches the end of that block I know it is time to get ready for bed. All I need is to know what today is. Close enough for me these days. I now wake whenever I wake even though habit usually gets me up around 6 am whether I need it or not. I check the obits and if I'm not listed I figure I might as well get up.
