A new electronic chip could bring relief to millions of UK patients with a serious sleep disorder that stops them breathing in their sleep; sleep apnoea. In a development that will come as welcome news to sufferers, UK surgeons have now begun implanting a chip on a critical nerve, helping people to breathe.
Eight million people, men and women, in the UK suffer from sleep apnoea. The condition is linked to hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, and even death. Those with the condition snore heavily and soft tissues in the mouth and throat close up the airway and obstruct breathing. The lack of oxygen can lead to hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, and diabetes. The airways become obstructed, and breathing repeatedly stops for several seconds or even minutes, and as a result, some patients die.
After being fitted with the chip, some patients sleep so soundly that they even start to dream for the first time in years.
