For as long as I can remember, I’ve always had skin issues. From acne to hyperpigmentation, you name it, I’ve probably had it!
After years of pouring money down the drain trying to self-medicate, I finally started seeing a dermatologist during the COVID pandemic, and I’m now happy to report there’s light at the end of the tunnel - no pun intended!
On the side, I’m also taking supplements to heal my skin from inside out. Here’s why I take these specific supplements!
1. Vitamin E
Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect the skin from free radical damage caused by environmental stressors such as UV radiation, pollution, and cigarette smoke. It helps to moisturise the skin by reducing water loss.
2. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from damage caused by free radicals. It is essential for the production of collagen, a protein that provides gives skin its firmness. It’s also been know brighten the skin and even out skin tone by inhibiting the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. This is particularly good news for those with hyperpigmentation or age spots. I also use a Vitamin C serum prescribed by my doctor.
*If applying Vitamin C topically, start with a good formulation of L-ascorbic acid, 10% before moving to 15-20%.
3. Folic acid
Folic acid is essential for overall health and wellness. It supports cell growth and repair. This can help keep the skin looking healthy and youthful. Folic acid has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and inflammation in the skin.
It's been proven to protect against skin cancer, particularly in combination with other vitamins, such as vitamin B12 and vitamin C.
4. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is plays an important role in bone health but also has several benefits for the skin. It promotes the growth and repair of skin cells. It can also help to stimulate the production of new skin cells, which keeps the skin looking healthy and youthful.
Vitamin D itself does not provide significant UV protection, but it can support the skin’s natural defense mechanisms against UV radiation. It does this by helping to repair UV-induced damage to the skin and supporting the production of antioxidants that can neutralise free radicals.
Do you use supplements? If so, which are your go-to ones and why? Or do you prefer to lean more on diet for these much-needed nutrients.
