Do You Have A Superstition?

Postby Spontaneo » 03 Nov 2023, 05:04

I have a superstition about the electricity going out, mostly late at night, and not being able to see my surroundings.

So, I keep a flashlight close my me.

How about you?

That's not really a superstition. It's just being prepared. I think for it to be a superstition it has to be irrational, like worrying that it's bad luck if a black cat crosses your path.

I'm not really a superstitious person.

I can be superstitious. Like when my palm itches, I believe I'm about to receive money from somewhere. When my top eye lid twitches, I believe I'll receive some good news. It's silly, really, but I still believe that nonsense  Or at least hope it's somehow true!

I was taught to bless a person when they sneeze. When I sneeze and do not get blessed, I think that the person not blessing me does not like me. They probably were just not taught.

There is a rather silly superstition that says that if we drool and someone sees and then we touch something red we will have great luck. I know, it's really silly, but I can't help but touch something red when I drool

Way back when I was a kid, there were many superstitions that concerned almost all my school friends as well as myself.

A superstition is a silly belief in something that has no basis in fact. Mostly young kids get caught up in such ideas but as you grow older and gain wisdom you eventually no longer think of these things.

As mentioned earlier, it was supposedly bad luck if a black cat crossed your path. If you broke a mirror, you were faced with 7 years of bad luck. When out walking, you avoided stepping on any cracks because that might break your mother's back. It was bad luck to walk under a ladder. If some accident happened you were supposed to toss a pinch of salt over your shoulder to ward off bad consequences. You were not supposed to get out of bed at night because the boogey man who lived under the bed might get you. If you told a lie, you were supposed to cross your fingers so it would not be a sin to lie ... and on and on.

Well, at multiple times since childhood I have managed to unintentionally test these silly beliefs enough to realize they are all dumb superstitions that are truly meaningless. There never was any basis in truth and all were just silly notions.

Age is supposed to mature you and give you the wisdom to realize they are a waste of time. Most intelligent adults do not give a thought to childish superstitions. It is time to grow up.

Fearing a blackout and being prepared with a flashlight is not being superstitious. You are using the wrong word to describe your situation. You are just being prepared for something that really does happen from time to time.

After blessing you for sneezing after three times, you are suspected to be having COVID-19.

Thank you for reassuring me that I am not being silly with my flashlight habit! This happens quite frequently during the winter when there are snow storms.

WHAT? How many feet do you have? I only have one right foot and one left foot. Feet is the plural form of foot. :o

In my culture, there are too many superstitions. One is that if you talk back at your parents, you would be under a curse and you would never prosper in life.

I rarely sneeze. I simply used sneezing as an example. My feelings simply get hurt if I do sneeze and not get blessed.
