Most of the time they go politically incorrect since they hire white actors to play POC people. Hollywood almost made a biopic of Harriet Tubman starring Julia Roberts.

Tubman was a former slave who escaped and helped many African Americans escape the States where slavery is legal.

I totally agree with you, it is! It is extremely racist to cast a white actress to play someone black and I think the same thing when they cast a black actor to play a white character in a live action anime, what the hell is happening to them? Put the black in a black character and the white in a white character and that's it, it's logical, they want to implement "equality and inclusion" by force and end up doing extremely racist things

So many movies changed the facts of real life because they figure they are boring and won't sell. What I want to know is do they need to get permission from the real people. I get that they can't get permission from dead people like Madame Walker.

But I remember when people tried to use Bruce Lee's image to promote an alcoholic beverage and his family jumped all over them.

So like for Argo, was Mr. Mendez cool with Ben Affleck playing the part?

FYI: When J-Lo did Selena, some people were upset that a Puerto Rican was playing a Mexican. But Selena's family was fine with it and gave her their blessing. She did a good job, by the way!

But I think you can cast anybody to play any part and get away with it because all you have to say is that it's "based on a true story". Not that it's true. But that it's "based on truth". Isn't that how they get around it?

Indeed, some movies make real life folks appear so different on the screen. We had some movies based on the life of some people.
Some were realistic, others made the person look so different from the real life one.

Yeah that's movies for you. in sound of music real life maria was a very strict lady though she was portray a cool person in the movie. you might just have to be another person entirely in a movie

Creative license of the movie makers allow them to make a few changes..well that's adding drama and special twists to attract business at box office.

Whenever I watch a movie supposedly based on history or a true story, I never believe the depiction is the truth.

Sometimes I think they try to stick close to the truth.

But often if they know that people think of the person as a hero and their personal life has some low or dark points, they rewrite their life story by erasing those dots on their timeline.

Because in the end, it's for entertainment!

I get what you're saying. One of my favorite TV detectives is Charlie Chan. The guy who played Charlie Chan is not Chinese. When the TV show Kung Fu was released, it was annoying that David Carridine had the lead role, when it was Bruce Lee's idea.

It's okay if a little bit of things are changed and that is harmless. This might be to make the movie more entertaining and appealing to audience. This is a good use of the creative license. But then there are cases where this freedom is taken too far and the changes change the real crux of the story and the character. Few of these have faced legal complications too

But do you really have to have get Mexicans play Mexicans? It's acting! And we have all kinds of make-up to change the way people look.

That's one argument.

But then there is also the argument about representation. Did a Mexican audition who was perfectly suited for the role, but he still didn't get the part? The next question is WHY? Was it discrimination or a different reason else? Like the person could be a jerk to work with. But of course, if you're Affleck you won't publicize that. You'll just pick an actor who auditioned who was also perfect for the part.

Because in the end, in the American entertainment industry, the only color that matters is GREEN!!

It's particularly crappy to hire a white actor to play a black character when that character is based on an actual person who was black. Especially someone of historical importance who was a major figure in the civil rights movement like Harriet Tubman!
