THEY RULE THE ROOST – THE HOUSEHOLD HELP

Most Indian households have maids and gardeners to tend to their household chores. In the godo old days this category came begging for jobs. Not any more. With more and more seeking education they go for jobs that they consider having higher status and perhaps with less exertion

There are those Placement Servicces who help those who are looking for household help and they too orule the roost charging exorbitant fees. They play games. On the surface all is hunky dory but suddenly there is chaos the one who is employed expresses dissatisfaction and leaves without notice. The game is played by the Placement Services who shift them to another household who pay them once again for the services.

Those who are directly employed play their own game too Knowing they are indispensable they demand more wages in the middle of the contract and they are given in. They pick and choose what work they want to do and again they are given in as something is better tham nothing is the thought that runs through the mins of the employers

Maids and gardeners are in demand more than any other category as with AI on the scene much of the work can be handled by it . Clerks are done away with They are no longer required.

Those in need are forced to bring down their standards – no more entertaining guests, visitors or house guests No more a 6 course meal, sweeping, swabbing is done once a weak. To the extent possible machines will take over – washing, grinding et al With staff behaving the way the way it does much of the housework falls on the shoulders of the employers living little time for any relaxation
The joint family system is a thing of the past and nucleus family system while has its advantages, disadvantages are more.

The gainers are restaurants where food is ordered more as a rule than an exception. The health freaks sure have to worry as there is a big difference between home food and restaurant food where cleanliness takes a toll
There is a solution however that one sees on the horizon. All in the household should rally round to take care of what needs to be done – husbands and children included. Doing away with maids and gardeners is the only way and when happens there will be a knock on the door where maids and gardeners come begging for jobs that they will never get.

What say?

How interesting. It sounds very different from how things are here. Australia is a relatively well to do country, but it's not so common to have servants here. Some people do have cleaners (we don't call them maids) or gardeners though, and also other people like someone who might do ironing for people (clients drop clothes that need to be ironed to their house and pick them up later). It's not something everybody has, especially not in the area where I have, just some people. Wages are higher here so that's a factor.

I worked as a cleaner myself when I was younger. Not for just one person though, since usually here people just hire a cleaner to come once a week, so you might have 5 or 6 different clients. I cleaned people's houses during the day while they were out at work. It was okay money, and I liked that I could just get on with my work without anyone bothering me and could just listen to music. If you were nosy you could go through people's private stuff, so beware of this if you hire a cleaner. I didn't personally, because I didn't really want to know, but sometimes people would leave things out that I was like "eww" (bits of lingerie, that sort of thing). I had a better time of it than the people I met who did cleaning for workplaces, like the shopping center where I used to work at another job. They were treated badly by both their employers and customers in the shops. I suspect that was partly due to racism, since they were mostly Asian and the owners and higher ups were white.

Anything else I have to say about what you have written comes with the caveat that I might not fully understand the context because I live in such a different society.

Hmm. It sounds like a good thing if people have more options. You don't come off well complaining that workers no longer have to beg, and maybe recognise the value of their own labour now.

Granted, changing how much they charge in the middle of the contract is not okay, but as for the rest... well, sounds like you're just going to have to adjust. It's what's called a reversal of fortune. You've gotten used to taking them for granted and now they are going to have a bit more power. Things will settle down eventually, but they'll probably be better off than they were before. Good for them.

It's so hard for me to get my head around someone complaining that they can't entertain and have dinner parties because there isn't somebody to do all the work for them. A lot of people live with that every day. If I want my house to be clean I have to clean it myself.
