Flu is something almost every family knows. It comes suddenly. One day you wake up fine, the next day your nose is blocked, head feels heavy, throat is dry, and the body is weak. In most homes, people first think of rushing to the clinic or buying tablets. But the truth is, many times, simple things we already have in the house can bring big relief.

When I was younger, my grandmother rarely bought medicine for flu. She always believed that nature gives us answers. And surprisingly, most of her remedies worked. I have carried some of those lessons up to today, and I want to share them with you.

Warm Lemon and Honey Drink

The first thing she always prepared was a cup of warm water mixed with lemon and honey. It was not only sweet but also soothing. Whenever my throat was scratching or I was coughing, this drink calmed it down. Lemon has that sharp taste that clears the throat, while honey coats it and makes it smooth. Till today, whenever I feel flu starting, I make this drink before anything else.

Note: If you have an Ulcer, consult your doctor before taking lemon. Some people say lemon stimulates ulcers when consumed in high quantities.

Steam From Hot Water

Another trick she used was steam. She would heat water until it boiled, put it in a basin, then cover me with a heavy cloth. “Breathe in slowly,” she would say. At first, I hated it because it made me sweat, but after a few minutes my blocked nose would open and I could breathe again. Sometimes she added a few leaves of eucalyptus, and the smell was strong but healing.

Ginger and Garlic Power

Ginger and garlic were never missing in her kitchen. She called them her “natural soldiers.” Whenever flu became tough, she would crush them, boil them in water, and add a little honey. The drink was spicy, even burning, but it chased the flu away slowly. Some people chew raw garlic, though the smell is not friendly. But for those who manage, it helps the body fight sickness.

Rest Is Also Medicine

One mistake many people make is forcing themselves to keep working when flu has hit hard. My grandmother always said, “Even the body needs to sleep so it can fight.” She would make me lie down, cover me in a blanket, and insist that I sleep. By the next day, I would already feel lighter. Simple rest is sometimes more powerful than any tablet.

Drinking Plenty of Fluids

Flu dries the body from inside, especially when fever comes with it. That is why she always encouraged plenty of fluids. Warm tea, porridge, or even just hot water with a little salt. The warmth helped ease the sore throat, and the fluids kept the body strong. Cold drinks, she always warned, would only make the throat pain worse.

Gargling Salt Water

Whenever my throat was too painful, she mixed salt with warm water and told me to gargle. It felt strange at first, but it truly reduced the pain. Even now, whenever I try it, the relief comes within minutes. It is the cheapest remedy you can find because salt and water are in every home.

Eating Light and Nutritious

When flu was heavy, eating big meals felt impossible. That is when light food like soup or porridge became the answer. Fruits like oranges, pawpaw, and mango also gave energy and vitamins. Instead of oily or fried food, my grandmother preferred soft, warm meals that the body could handle easily.

Why These Remedies Still Work

Looking back, I realize most of these remedies are not just old stories. They truly work because they support the body in natural ways. They do not give instant miracles, but they make flu lighter and help the body heal without spending too much money.

Knowing When to See a Doctor

Of course, not all flu can be managed at home. If the fever goes too high, if breathing becomes hard, or if the sickness stays for many days, then it is important to see a doctor. Children, older people, and expectant mothers need extra care. Home remedies are good, but health professionals are also important when the situation is beyond simple care.

Closing Word

Flu is not new, and every family has their own small remedies passed down from parents and grandparents. Some boil herbs, some make lemon tea, some prefer steam, and some just sleep under heavy blankets. The beauty is that most of these ways are natural and affordable. Next time flu visits, do not rush to the pharmacy immediately. First, look around your kitchen, try these simple remedies, and give your body a chance to heal.

Actually, any fruit that is sour. Recently, I planted a tropical plant called starfruit on my backyard, and it's a very sour fruit, and yeah, it helps me with my fever problems. It's hard to eat because it's too sour, but whenever I eat one, my nose gets less cloggy.

That is good of you. If you say anything sour, you are right. Just knowing how to use it for results is only what one needs.

Indeed, light and nutritious food is medicine when the body fails. Soups and water porridge are in the right amount.

Fruits like oranges and papaya provide quick energy without weakening the body. Do not force yourself to eat heavy foods when you have a fever.

A healthy person is not told to be a doctor. Your body knows what it needs. Wait until you can eat with all your strength. Light food can give you the strength to fight the disease.
