Breaking your braces can be stressful, but don’t panic—it happens more often than you might think. Wires snap, brackets come loose, and sometimes things just feel... off. The important thing is to stay calm and know what steps to take to stay comfortable and protect your teeth until you can see your orthodontist.
First, check out what’s broken. Did a wire pop out? Is a bracket loose or completely detached? Is anything poking your cheek or gums? Knowing what’s wrong will help you figure out how to deal with it in the short term.
If a wire is poking you, try gently pushing it back into place with a clean pencil eraser or the back of a spoon. If that doesn’t work, you can cover the sharp end with orthodontic wax (your orthodontist probably gave you some when you first got your braces). No wax? In a pinch, a small piece of sugarless gum can help stop the wire from irritating your mouth.
If a bracket has come loose but is still attached to the wire, you can leave it in place. Again, wax can help keep it from sliding around too much. If the bracket has completely fallen off, put it in a small bag or container and bring it to your next appointment.
Now, this part is important: avoid foods that could make the situation worse. Stay away from anything sticky, crunchy, or chewy—basically, anything that could yank on your braces. Stick to soft foods until you get the problem fixed.
Even if it doesn’t hurt, call your orthodontist as soon as you can. They’ll let you know if it’s something that needs to be fixed right away or if it can wait until your next visit. Don’t try to fix major issues yourself—leave that to the pros.
And hey, don’t feel bad if something breaks. Braces are tough, but life happens. Just handle it calmly, protect your mouth, and get it checked out. Before you know it, you’ll be back on track toward that straighter smile.
