Thrift Stores

Postby Spontaneo » 21 Jan 2025, 04:58

Yes, I have looked into working with Poshmark.com, but do not think I understand all of the requirements.

However, I have thought about what to do but keep putting off.

I have finally asked my roommate. She agrees.

There is a huge thrift store nearby (not a consignment though and not a GoodWill) where you take your gently used items to sell. If your item sells, you get part of the profit.

I can take all items in a single car trip and not have to worry about going to the post office, keeping track of inventory, figure out accounting, handle returns, etc.

I really would like to give to my local Salvation Army, but when I did take clothes to their office, the woman put my clothes outside of the back of the building as trash for people to go through. The Salvation Army in the city I have learned can travel to your house to pick up items, but my roommate would never allow at our house.

Most people tend to see thrifts wears as poor and and low quality so that is why most people find it difficult to wear thrift clothes but for me I would prefer to wear a neatly used thrift because its helps one to save economically so I won’t mind buying a thrift wear

The thrift store is going to sell my personal items for myself. All I have to do is drop off the items.

I find some great finds at thrift stores most of the time. I go there looking for certain items. I stay away from clothing unless its a name brand and something I can sell fast

You can't always sell them. Sometimes they're not in good enough condition. Sometimes they are but you can't find anyone who wants them and is willing to pay for them.

Spontaneo wasn't throwing her clothes out, the thrift store did that. They do that when they are overwhelmed by too many donations.

Another way to donate clothes is to offer them to friends or family. I have a friend who often swaps clothes with me- she sometimes ends up with things that are too big so she gives them to me, and I pass on things that are too small for me to her. It helps that we have similar taste in clothes. If you have children, you can pass clothes along to friends with younger children.

I guess it depends where you live, but here in Australia I wouldn't bother to do that. They get washed before they are sold, and if you are worried you can just wash them again (and you should always wash new or new to you clothes before wearing them anyway). A hot wash and drying in the sun should get rid of any nasties.

I don't wash new clothes before I wear them. Is there a reason why I should?

My mother has almost always washed her clothes first. Myself? No.

Yes, I always wash my clothes, just not when the clothes are brand-new.

It's not the end of the world if you don't, but it's a good idea to wash them. Firstly, that they're new doesn't necessarily mean they're clean. Other people may have tried them on (and having worked in clothing retail, sometimes clothes were gross after just being tried on, if the person was smelly or sweaty). Also, the factory where they're made might not be all that clean and sanitary, and sometimes they get left on the floor in the stockroom, and are handled by many people before they are sold.

Secondly, they may be treated with various chemicals like formaldehyde (used to prevent clothes from getting wrinkled or mildewy in transit. These can cause irritation if they're against your skin, and it's always good to reduce your exposure to chemicals like that if you can.

The following is what stood out to myself:

Avoid items that are labeled “iron-free,” “wrinkle-free,” “stain resistant” or “permanent press” because there is a big possibility that they contain formaldehyde.

The thing is that some of these clothes have been stored for a pretty long time and get contaminated somehow. So getting them washed before wearing is the way to go
