I'm not in favour of the death penalty for anybody, but I can understand why people feel that way about pedophiles. I definitely think they should be punished, with prison.

The problem is a lot of people tell lies and can get their children to tell lies as well. Not to mention America doesn't have a "just" justice system.

Our Congress- men or women have NOT proven themselves to be trustworthy. Whenever they want to take extreme measures, I refuse to back them up on it. They can't even do “simple stuff” like ENACT EFFECTIVE GUN CONTROL LAWS. (Something other countries have managed to do.)

They want me to trust them to make life-and-death decisions?

That's fair enough. Mistakes do get made, and innocent people have been put to death many times. For me, though, that's not the point. Even if we could be 100% sure that someone was guilty I wouldn't support the death penalty. Killing people (who don't want to die, voluntary euthanasia is a whole other topic) is wrong, so we shouldn't do it.

Wow, ok! I think it'd be an uphill battle to get that bill passed. Botswana still has capital punishment, and each time an offender is hung, there's uproar around the world. Even though there are a few other countries who still practise it. I think once it's been abolished, there's no going back. And with our new president being a committed Human Rights lawyer, I can see him doing away with it.

You could certainly argue that it is justice, but that doesn't mean we have to do it. I believe that killing people is wrong, and so the answer to the problem is not killing more people. Similarly, rape is wrong, but we do not punish rapists by raping them.

We can punish people with imprisonment (assuming that the discussion is taking place in a country that can afford to do that). That also means that there is room for redemption. Some murderers might never repent, but others do, and sometimes they go on to make positive contributions to the world.
