I recently watched a gripping documentary titled ‘The Mission” which I’d like to recommend.
In 2018, young American missionary, John Chau, made headlines around the world when he was shockingly killed with bows and arrows while attempting to contact one of the world’s most isolated Indigenous peoples on India’s emote North Sentinel Island.
For context, The Sentinelese are one of the most isolated indigenous groups in the world. Known for their hostility towards outsiders, they are resistant to all contact. They are hunter-gatherers who use stone age tools like bows, arrows, and adzes to hunt wild boar, turtle, and fish, and also eat fruits, roots, and tubers. Their population is estimated to be between 50 and 400 people.
THE MISSION uncovers the gripping story beyond the headlines. Through exclusive interviews and with unprecedented access to Chau’s secret plans, personal diaries, and video archives, THE MISSION examines the mythology of exploration that inspired him, the evangelical community that supported his quest, and reveals his own father’s heartbreak as Chau’s youthful thirst for adventure became a fatal obsession.
This was a brilliant watch, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Have you watched it? Despite repeated warnings, John was hell bent on going to ‘save’ the Sentinelese… do you think he was right to did what he did?
