Ways To Meet People

Postby Spontaneo » 02 Jan 2025, 05:39

Whether you are single and work everything from 9 to 5, the overnight shift or sedentary from home, it is hard to socialize. There are a few good ways to overcome these obstacles, and the following may just work for you!

Church

OK, this has not worked for myself. However, if you do find the right church, the Blessed Virgin Mary just might intercede!

Post Office

In most post offices, there are activity boards stating when and where an event is held!

Farmers Market - support local businesses

Over the past couple of years, a student held a farmers market during the summer to be able to pay for his college tuition. A nice way to support him and talk to other supporters.

Pass out flyers for a cause, charity or political campaign

I know that some of these volunteers can be annoying. A few weeks ago, a man and woman showed up at my door talking about gas. I let the man finish then I said, “you need to talk to my landlord”. He said, “you mean you are a renter”? I said, “yes”. The couple turned around and took off!

Fitness classes or the gym having a post-workout smoothie

I get jealous of my friends on Weight Loss Buddy. They can afford expensive gym memberships, fancy home equipment, expensive food and when we show our food, their dinnerware is elegant. There are many days when you gain a follower though which can make one happy. A “friendly” kick in the butt sometimes! The members always talk about protein powder in their smoothies, for example, which is way out of my league. I guess meeting friends there is a competition.

Coffee shop

There are no coffee shops around here which is disappointing. I did go to a Starbucks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania a few years ago. I just cannot afford the luxury. Besides, Starbucks are always jam-packed as opposed to a cozy coffee mom and pop shop, of which Starbucks is too difficult to strike up a conversation.

Shopping

We all like to shop, don’t we? Remember the days when you had to go through Sears and JCPenney catalogs? Who would have thought of shopping these days? Walking through your mall or browsing online! Here in the United States we even have “yard sales” which some of you in other countries call “boot sales”. You can start a conversation with the seller and other shoppers. Why don’t you hold a “yard sale” or “boot sale” yourself? I, personally, consider shopping “retail therapy”.

You can do it!

Those are good ideas.

I'd suggest joining clubs, like book clubs or other social groups. If you have Meetup (https://www.meetup.com/)or a similar site where you are you might be able to find social groups near you devoted to specific interests. For example I have seen groups that meet up to watch and discuss movies, a feminist group, a bike riding group and a skeptic group. They have groups for different age groups, for singles etc. Classes can be really good too, like water colour painting, drawing, music etc. Sometimes there are free ones through libraries, city councils etc. I don't know what would be available in other cities/countries but it's worth having a look.

Volunteering is also great, although I'd be trying to make friends with other volunteers, not with people I was handing flyers to. It just seems a lot easier, since when you're handing out flyers people are going to be defensive from the outset, expecting you to try and sell them something or waste their time. I have made friends through volunteering though, some of whom I'm still good friends with many years later. I met them volunteering in charity shops and at events like festivals.

" The members always talk about protein powder in their smoothies, for example, which is way out of my league. "

You drink Slim Fast shakes though. That's the same thing, though you might buy it in liquid form. Some protein powders might actually be cheaper. I get mine from a bulk foods place.

Yes, I know that Slim Fast is the same thing. I am talking about the huge tubs such as Whey protein, for example.

I'm not sure what you mean by out of your league then? Buying in bulk is usually cheaper, at least in the long term. Slimfast is whey protein based. That's probably the most popular type of protein powder. I can't have dairy so I get hemp, pea or soy protein powder, whichever is cheapest.

Fine. I can't really taste it when it's mixed into a smoothie. It's very popular with people who want a plant based protein powder.

Not by itself. But then, nothing you eat will do that by itself.

I add it to smoothies to up the protein content because in general eating more protein helps to build muscle (again, not by itself, you need to exercise). Losing weight is not my goal, but if you increase muscle mass it does alter your metabolism which means you burn more calories.

@Jem Smith,

For example, with Slim Fast, you have 2 shakes, 3 small meals and 1 sensible dinner. Would having pea powder have the same affect in place of the Slim Fast?

OK. Thank you. A friend is going into the city this upcoming Friday. I might give her the money to pick up a canister of pea powder. Are there any protein powders with a good taste?

I forgot about the pea powder. I have decided to just stick with my homemade protein shakes and then when I can afford, I am going to buy another canister of Slim Fast.

Church is the easiest place for one to socialize. Anyone that can't socialize in church would surely have a hard time socialising elsewhere.
