6 “Bad” Fruits You Should Be Adding to Your Smoothies

Postby sweerie_banana » 13 Aug 2024, 12:48

Have you ever thought of some fruits as 'bad'?

When it comes to smoothies, many people stick to the usual suspects: bananas, berries, and spinach. However, some fruits often get a bad rap for various reasons, yet they can be a delicious and nutritious addition to your smoothies. Here are six “bad” fruits that deserve a spot in your blender.

1. Bananas: Often seen as a high-sugar fruit, bananas are sometimes avoided by those watching their sugar intake. However, they are rich in potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. Bananas add creaminess and natural sweetness to smoothies, making them a great base for any recipe.

2. Avocados: While often praised for their healthy fats, avocados can be overlooked due to their higher calorie content. However, they are incredibly nutrient-dense, and packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, and various vitamins. Adding avocado to your smoothie gives it a creamy texture and keeps you feeling full longer.

3. Mangoes: Some people avoid mangoes because they think they’re too high in sugar. However, mangoes are also packed with vitamins A and C, along with antioxidants. Their sweet, tropical flavor can elevate any smoothie, making it taste like a vacation in a glass.

4. Grapes: Often dismissed as just a snack, grapes can add a refreshing sweetness to smoothies. They contain antioxidants and vitamins that are beneficial for heart health. Plus, they blend well, adding a lovely consistency to your drink without overpowering other flavors.

5. Figs: Figs may not be the first fruit that comes to mind when you think of smoothies, but they are a hidden gem. They are high in fiber, which aids digestion, and they have a unique sweetness that can enhance your smoothie. Dried figs can be especially convenient and add a chewy texture.

6. Coconut: While many love coconut for its flavor, some avoid it due to its higher fat content. However, coconut is a fantastic source of healthy fats, fiber, and minerals like manganese. Whether you use coconut milk, shredded coconut, or fresh coconut meat, it can add a rich, tropical flavor to your smoothies.

Incorporating these “bad” fruits into your smoothies can not only enhance the flavor but also provide a variety of nutrients that benefit your health. Don’t shy away from these fruits just because they have a reputation—embrace them! Experiment with different combinations to find your perfect blend, and enjoy the delightful taste and health benefits they bring to your smoothies. Remember, a well-rounded smoothie can include a mix of fruits, so feel free to get creative and enjoy all that nature has to offer!

What was your experience with those fruits?

I've never thought of any fruit as 'bad'. Most of these are great in smoothies though.

Mangoes are one of the most popular fruits used in smoothies here. In mango season we need to find ways to use them all up since there are so many.

When I make smoothie bowls I usually use berries, half a banana (for the sweetness) and about a quarter of an avocado (for the fat). I also add shredded coconut after I put it in the bowl. Making the smoothie on coconut milk would be too fatty for me.

I'm not a fan of fresh figs. I quite liked dried ones, but I don't think I want a chewy texture in a smoothie.

Avocado is a very healthy food because although its calories are high, it is still nutrient dense and contains monounsaturated fats, fiber, and vitamins. So when you add it to a smoothie, it gives a creamy texture and makes you feel full for a long time.

Figs are truly underrated in smoothies but they add a unique flavor and clean health benefits. Their fiber aids digestion and their natural sweetness makes the blend smooth without too much sugar. Adding dried figs gives a slightly chewy texture that makes the drink more refreshing. They also contain minerals like potassium and calcium that help the body. It's an easy way to transform your smoothie from ordinary to special.
