I am a witness. There are very many reasons why people should avoid eating. Some of the factors are unavoidable; while some can be avoided in case you feel uncomfortable staying without eating, or even when it is considered risky. While eating is good and a way to help your body grow, avoiding eating or call it fasting can help to cleanse your body, and many other advantages.

Below are some of the reasons you should avoid eating

• If doctors recommend so. This is known as medical fasting. Doctors recommend patients to avoid eating when they have a scheduled operation or tests like an Endoscopy. I was advised to take my last meal 12 hours prior to the endoscopy time. Oh yes this was my first time to spend long hours without eating something yet I was sick. Another reason related can be due to preventing complications such as aspiration, certain blood tests, managing epilepsy, etc.

• For those who know the good about body detoxification, you already know why you must fast or avoid food for some time. This allows your body’s digestive system a break and thus being able to get rid of all possible toxins that would have piled up. But of course, you do this with a doctor’s recommendation to avoid making complications for your body.

• If you are targeting to lose some weight, of course you should avoid eating – sometimes avoid eating certain food and concentrate on water mostly. Most weight loss programs target burning a certain number of calories daily and which can be achieved if you avoid eating.

• For Muslims, you all know that during the month of Ramadan, eating during day time is not allowed unless you got some good reasons as the Quran teaches. Good of all, I have never heard of anyone who got complications because of this religious fasting. Even the followers of Jesus have their own fasting where they avoid eating completely. This means that avoiding eating somewhere is backed up by religion.

• Certain illness conditions are known to respond to to those who avoid eating. For example people suffering from food allergies or intolerance are recommended to avoid eating certain foods.

• When you are in comma, a situation of acute illness, you should avoid eating. Although this is managed by medical personnel, all I know is that there is no direct food eating.

The next time you think about avoiding eating, just know that you are safe and will survive. Just it is recommended that you do this with caution.

You don't have to fast to lose weight. It depends a bit on why you are trying to lose weight and your personal circumstances, but exercise is as big a factor as diet, and dieting doesn't have to mean fasting. It can just mean being more mindful about what you eat and when. You're much more likely to succeed at following a diet that's not too extreme. Extreme diets might make you lose weight in the short term, but you're likely to put it straight back on once you stop.

I'm not saying people shouldn't fast for religious reasons (do what you want), but there have definitely been cases of people who have been harmed by religious fasting. I read about a religous leader not long ago who was jailed because many of his followers starved themselves to death.

 You don't have to avoid eating when you're in a coma, because it's impossible to eat while you're unconscious. People in a coma in hospitals get fed the nutrients they need through a tube, so they aren't fasting.

I have messed this up trying to edit when it would only let me hit quote instead, but I wanted to add that I think this was an interesting topic for an article. Thanks for sharing it.

So true, there is no way one can eat when they are unconscious.

That thing you call medical fasting is very real. Doctors say not to eat before an operation or test like endoscopy. It is for safety reasons and to prevent complications like aspiration or interference with blood tests. Also, for conditions like epilepsy, it can help control that fasting is often about twelve hours before the procedure and it becomes difficult especially when you are sick, but it is necessary because it brings clean results and helps recovery without too much stress.
