5 Foods to stock up on this May

Postby sweerie_banana » 05 May 2024, 05:19

Happy New Month. May is here. Stocking up on seasonal foods can be both delicious and economical. As May rolls around, the transition from spring to summer brings a vibrant array of produce to the table. Here are five foods to add to your shopping list this month:

1. Asparagus: May mark the peak season for fresh asparagus. This versatile vegetable is not only packed with nutrients like vitamins A, C, E, and K but also adds a delightful crunch to any dish. Whether grilled, roasted, or sautéed, asparagus shines in salads, pasta, or as a standalone side dish. Look for firm, bright green spears with tightly closed tips for the best flavor.

2. Strawberries: Sweet, juicy, and bursting with flavor, strawberries are a quintessential springtime treat. May signals the start of strawberry season in many regions, offering an abundance of these ruby-red gems. Enjoy them fresh on their own, blended into smoothies, or as a topping for pancakes and yogurt. For the tastiest strawberries, seek out those that are plump, fragrant, and deeply colored.

3. Spinach: Tender and nutrient-rich, spinach is at its prime during the spring months. Packed with iron, magnesium, and vitamins A and K, this leafy green is a nutritional powerhouse. Add raw spinach to salads for a vibrant burst of color and flavor, or incorporate it into cooked dishes like omelets, pasta, and stir-fries. Choose spinach with crisp, dark green leaves and avoid any that appear wilted or slimy.

4. Peas: Fresh peas are a seasonal delight that shines in May. Whether you prefer sweet English peas, crisp sugar snap peas, or tender snow peas, there's a variety to suit every palate. These versatile legumes add a pop of sweetness to salads, risottos, and stir-fries, or can be enjoyed simply steamed with a touch of butter. When selecting peas, look for pods that are plump and bright green, with firm peas inside.

5. Rhubarb: With its tart flavor and vibrant hue, rhubarb adds a unique twist to both sweet and savory dishes. May marks the peak of rhubarb season, offering an abundance of this tangy stalk. While commonly used in pies, crisps, and jams, rhubarb can also be roasted, stewed, or incorporated into sauces and chutneys. When choosing rhubarb, opt for firm, crisp stalks with deep red coloration for the best flavor.

By stocking up on these seasonal delights, you'll not only enjoy the freshest flavors of spring but also support local farmers and reduce your environmental footprint. So head to your nearest farmers' market or grocery store and fill your basket with these delicious May offerings.

Not all of these are common around our area. Yet we prefer Okra, Bottle Gourd, Ridge Gourd, Indian Squash and then we like to have many of these along with curd as we face 40 C plus summer temperatures.

None of this is even available in my country. We prefer to cultivate crops like water leaf, and spinach.
