My Experience With Various Freelancing Sites

Postby Mika » 08 Feb 2024, 04:51

Ask anyone, they will tell you freelancing is the best way to make money online. Ask an online earner, he will tell you freelancing is one of the most difficult ways to make money online. Some online worker will also tell you that they cannot work on freelancing sites because they do not have skills. Based on my own experience, I will tell you freelancing is the best way to make money online provided you have high paying skills on multiple discipline, portfolio to impress your clients, and you don’t lose hope. It might even take 6 months to sell or your service, however, if you are persistent, you can become successful one day.
Here I am sharing my experience with various freelancing sites, and hopefully be able to inspire guys who are looking forward to excel on freelancing sites.

Upwork

I signed up for Upwork in around 2017, but I did not bid on any jobs on Upwork until the spring of 2020. I lost my job due to Covid and did not have any income source, therefore, I was looking for online jobs. I bid on multiple jobs but it took me almost 4 months to get hired. However, once I submitted my first assignment and got 5 start reviews from the client, I started getting more jobs. Now, about 70 of my online income comes from freelancing on Upwork. I started as a web designer and developer but now I do various jobs like content writing, ebook writing, etc.

You can definitely earn a lot on Upwork because it's a big company (a publicly traded company) with lots of employers and freelancers. Build skills on multiple discipline, build portfolio related to your skills and then consistently bid on jobs.

Fiverr

When I waited for employers to choose my bid on Upwork, I decided to join Fiverr and sell the same services that I was selling on Upwork. I managed to sell a couple of gigs but since I was gewtting more job offers on Upwork, I stopped being active on Fiverr. To become successful on Fiverr, you need two things, one, a great gig, especially on micro niche, and two, rank your gig on internal search.

Freelancer

When I first joined, I was applying on jobs on a regular basis but I was not hired for any jobs I applied. The problem with Freelancer is the platform is not very active, there aren’t many jobs. I would have succeed if I had persistently worked, but I was getting work on Upwork, thus, I stopped using Freelancer. It's been over a year since I last visited the platform.

Conclusion

Some people say Freelancer is less competitive than Fiverr and Upwork so getting job is easier. However, these people forget that there aren't many employers either, thus, making it harder to find work. Still, you can give it a try along with other platforms if you want.

That's very interesting, thanks for sharing it with us Mika and well done on your success with Upwork. Do you bid for most of the work you get on Upwork, or do members of the site contact you and ask you to work for them?

Trying multiple platforms, as you suggested, can be a good strategy to increase visibility and access different pools of clients.

Additionally, building a strong portfolio, networking with potential clients, and consistently delivering high-quality work is essential for success in the competitive freelancing industry, regardless of the platform chosen.

My current success rate is 60 percent. I mostly bid on jobs, however, I also have had a couple of contracts through direct contact.

Quite a frank and honest opinion. Freelancing can be a good option but apart from hard work and skill building, one needs mental toughness and patience.

What kind of services are you trying to sell? You need to be highly skilled and have impressive portfolio to secure jobs on freelancing platforms
