Our local community Chamber of Commerce has a big running race through dozens of streets to raise funds for various local charities. Hundreds run and receive payments per mile for the donations. Hundreds more stand at various intersections to guide the runners where to turn, or to hand out water bottles as they pass.

The race ends at the Chamber offices and they toss a big party in the back lot. You run into all kinds of people mixing as you hang out at the event.

The local population was 97,949 at last count. It is not a huge city but it's not a tiny town either. Based on the size of the event, I'm guessing somewhere close to half the community participates each year. Its a fun way to meet your neighbors.

I participate because I want to have good contacts with them. We live near each other when I get some problems they support me first and when they face and difficult situations I try to become first who reach for their help.

Participating in various events in your community is a great way to build social networks, especially for business owners l. It would be a lot easier to introduce more persons about your business.

Considering that I live in the middle of nowhere, we don't have neighborhood events. As for the ones in town, it tends to be filled with people I can't stand. It's always the ones who judge people on their appearance. My dad can get along with anyone, but with me being heavily tattooed and pierced I don't get the same kindness. I've been told I look intimidating even though I'm a teddy bear and a very nice person.

You must be feeling the need for neighbors, I mean inside you. Not all neighbors will see you the same way. Some may be good while others can be the opposite. That is why participating can help you bridge that gap and make them see you the way you want. Sad that you live in the middle of nowhere. Who knows, may be one day you will live in the middle of neighbors.

I agree that it's good to participate in neighbourhood events sometimes, if you can. Not everybody can though, because some people live in places that don't have events like that, and some can't due to disability or other reasons. It's also valid not to want to join in a social gathering. That's just not everybody's cup of tea.

I have a good relationship with my next door neighbours at least, and a few others in my street. It think that's a good idea because then you can look out for each other. We don't have things like neighbourhood BBQs or whatever though. It sounds nice, but you'd have to have somebody host them at their house since there's no public space close by to do it, and it would be hard to get people together. I don't have the time or energy for that at this point in my life, and I think probably my neighbours would feel the same way.

I do sometimes participate in events aimed at the larger community of my city- things centred around the library or the showgrounds where they sometimes have stuff for Christmas or Halloween. The local schools also put things on for the school community, although it's not necessarily appropriate to attend if you don't have children at the school.

In other words you connect with people who are outside where you live. Oh I get you.
