Tossing everything into the trash can ensures usable items and functional appliances see landfills rather than restoration or resale. But seeking opportunities to recycle the old into renewed value, additional income or environmental conservation gives many household goods surprising second lives. Explore recycling or reselling this surprising array of 15 items likely already surrounding you:

1) Used Electronics

Phones, laptops tablets and TVs seem obsolete but fetch cash through ecoATM kiosks buying back devices still marketable to new users. Or trade-in for credits on replacements.

2) Scrap Metal

Mowers missing motors, dented appliances, old grills and more qualify for cash-per-pound at scrap metal warehouses always hungry for recyclable steel etc. Lighten your load sustainably.

3) Mattresses and Furniture

Gently used beds, couches, recliners and more retain sizable value via Craigslist, consignment or donation/pickup arrangements through charities willing to invest sweat equity into small restore jobs for eventual retail resell profits.

4) Used Musical Equipment and Instruments

Local music stores, instructors and secondary marketplaces frequently buy certain quality used guitars, amps, pianos etc at attractive markups anticipating repair profits and resale. Offload and upgrade simultaneously.

5) Antiques and Collectibles

Vintage decorative items, sports memorabilia, trading cards, cameras and countless collector niches harbor overlooked value typically only an antique appraisal away. Maybe an eBay score awaits those tucking treasures away!

6) Used Tires

Big O and smaller tire shops freely accept retreadable old tires as raw material for recycling efforts diverting waste while providing customers pro-rated credits on replacements. Don’t just trash them!

7) Car and Truck Batteries

Nearly all auto parts and battery specialty outfitters offer core charge rebates handing over dying lead acid batteries now illegal to toss. Doing so funds proper recycling and earns cash incentives around $10-$15 typically per unit. Not huge but better than the bin!

8) Used Motor Oil and Parts

Similarly most automotive oil change chains and some independent repair shops will accept old motor oil (and additional parts like alternators etc) as recyclable assets not requiring specialized waste handling on your end to dispose of responsibly.

9) Kitchenware

Functional blenders, food processors not getting love anymore from minimalists make great donations to soup kitchen and shelter kitchens constantly needing appliances. Or offer on Buy Nothing community gifts.

10) Old Sporting Goods

From seldom used treadmills to outdoor playsets the kids outgrew long ago, gently upgradeable fitness and recreation equipment retains real value to secondhand buyers willing to invest sweat equity into refurbishments.

11) Textiles

Stained but structurally sound apparel and fabrics find renewed purpose through textile recycling programs keeping fibers circulating in economy rather than choking landfills. Non-donatable textiles only please!

12) Suitcases and Luggage

Retro and vintage luggage sets come back en vogue periodically but usable modern pieces also sell across vacation destinations via Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace helping value-conscious travelers transport their deals home!

13) DVDs/CDs

Surviving streaming wars, music albums and movie copies in decent condition with original artwork still command cash offers from niche collectors through marketplace exchanges hungry for nostalgia.

14) Old Ink Cartridges

Believe or not decades-old printer ink cartridges still contain recoverable resources like metals, minerals and residual colors crucially recyclable through manufacturer takeback initiatives. Don't let leftover toner terminate irresponsibly!

15) Cardboard Moving Boxes

Apartment hoppers and frequent movers happily rescue gently used moving boxes from recycling programs through Buy Nothing community gifting keeping reusability circulating. Plus some offerers get reimbursed upfront through hip resell apps like BOXEDIN.

Curbside programs present just the tip of responsible waste stream diversion options if looking closer across underutilized possessions. Reframe trash as potential barter opportunities or supplemental income sources with mild effort. One person's dusty clutter harbors redemptive potential for customers and causes fighting throwaway mindsets!
