Reasons to Dance

Dancing is an art form as old as human civilisation. People dance for religious ceremonies, to celebrate, to exercise, or just to feel good. Here are some reasons you should give dancing a try if you don't already do it.

1. For exercise.

There are a lot of different kinds of dance, but they're all a good way to exercise. Dancing can be a whole body work out, working the muscles in your core, your legs and arms. It can help to build muscle tone, strength and endurance, and is good for your posture and balance. If you can't get to classes, or you want to dance in between them, you can practice dancing at home in your own living room. You can use tutorials from YouTube, or the Wii game 'Just Dance' to get you going, or just put on some music and go for it. Just be sure warm up before you get started and cool down afterwards.

2. To be social

Some dances are performed with a partner, as in ballroom or swing dance, or with a group, like in line dancing. Even with dances that can be performed solo, taking a dance class can be a great way to meet new people. Some dance classes are more serious about developing skills in order to perform, but others are mainly about the socialising, so shop around and see if you can find a class that has what you are looking for. Community bulletin boards, newsletters and Facebook groups can be a good place to look for a class in your area. Gyms often host zumba and hip hop classes.

3. For weight loss

The number of calories burned by dancing varies from person to person, depending on factors like your weight and muscle mass, as well as the intensity of your dance routine, but if you work up a sweat dancing it's going to burn calories.

Some of the more energetic dance styles you could try include Salsa and Hip Hop.

4. To build confidence and self esteem

Learning a new skill could give a boost to your self esteem, and knowing how to dance can be a real confidence builder at social events. If you have negative ideas about your own body, dancing could help you with that too. Instead of just focusing on what your body looks like, you can focus on the things it can do.

5. For fun.

Last, but not least, possibly the best reason to dance is for enjoyment. Dancing can be a great release from the stresses of your day, a chance to let your hair down and just be you. Have fun!

You just gave me a number of reasons why I must try dancing. I take long without doing this since it is not part of me. But I love seeing others dance.

Dancing is now a high paying skill in so many countries. One just has to know if he or she is good with it. And find a way to make money out of it.

Me too. It's a good way to de-stress.

Yes, you can make money out of it, but it's difficult. Dancers usually can only work as dancers for a few years, then they need to do something else because it's so hard on the body after a while. Lots of them become dance teachers.

Dancers can actually stay dancing for decades if sportsmen ams women can. There is no limits to it. I know lots of people that have long dancing careers and have made millions of dollars from it.

Thanks for sharing that with us Jem Smith, what type of dancing do you do yourself? Do you have any tips for someone who doesn't dance, on how to get started?

I've tried a few different types of dance socially: Line dancing, hip hop, classical and jazz ballet, Bhangra and a few others. I'm not good at any of them, but that doesn't really matter to me since I just do it for fun. If you're just getting started it's a good idea to take a class, because they can give you some basic moves to begin with, as well as tips on how to avoid injuring yourself. There are videos tutorials for free online, but personally I sometimes have trouble getting the moves right without someone there to actually show me and give me feedback.

Some dancers can keep doing it for decades, lots can't, unfortunately, due to injuries. The training phase takes about ten years, then the average length of career of a professional dancer is about 8 years. https://www.danceaustralia.com.au/expertise/pros-and-cons. Most retire in their 30s or 40s.

Re. making millions, in Australia the average salary of a professional dancer is $76k a year, and in the US it's about $50k a year (for perspective, a teacher in high school or primary earns about $66k a year). I wouldn't think there would be many earning millions.

Since I was curious, I looked into the richest dancers in the world and there are a handful who are millionaires, but the richest of them don't make as much as the wealthiest actors and singers. Since most dancers don't make much, and have to work so hard to be successful, I think you've really got to love it to make it a career. But luckily you can enjoy it without doing it for a living.

Eh, looks like dancing is another professional that pays. I love watching others do it especially the queen dancers here and I am glad to be part of those who sit and enjoy while those who know do so.

I love and agree with all the points above! I adore dancing and always have done. Back when I used to enjoy going out clubbing when I was at uni, I stayed in shape without even trying because I'd dance the weekend away, from night until sunrise  Now that I'm older and my priorities have changed, I'd love to join a dance club and learn how to do Latin dance. I especially like salsa and bachata <3

My baby sister is just 11. She has already started making money from dancing. She is under management.

Good luck to her! What kind of dancing does she do?
