Often we follow Career paths along a predictable route. It could be a standard profile of a Doctor, Scientist, Administrative Officer, Police Service, Engineer and so on.
Even many people might be aware of standard ranks in certain Job profiles.
Yet with the changing times, often there is nothing that is
- Standard
- Predictable
- Certain
Often, we need to alter our ways in between. Or the way we work.
And if things like lack of what kind of work we need to do, the renumeration that we get, The suitable work environment, or at times the kind of people that work around us.
So we might go fo a Mid Career Profile change.
Often one finds one at such crossroads especially in the line that Yours Truly is in i.e Information Technology(IT).
So does one needs to make such decisions straightaway?
Or wait, do we need to deliberate this decision with all the possible pros and cons before reaching a decision, or a course of action?
Well, let's deliberate the arguments in favor first. Later on, arguments against such a Mid career move.
Points for such a move:
1)A person achieves best when he or she is doing something they are fond of.
That makes them immersed in their work day in and day out.
On the other hand, if the work involves something that makes them feel bored, feeling or emotion less, or there are challenges in the way the processes are around us, or lack of a stimulating environment; then it is time to take a decision.
Why not go for a change and towards something that one relishes.
2)Often we get into our comfort zones and stop networking, trying out things differently.
Even our Learning reduces.
If one has to change stream mid course, it is tough but why not see the positive side
-Renewed attempts at social networking (Not just through social media...)
-New Learnings
-Honing new skills that can come in handy
-Re-wiring the way we think and make decisions, often making us a better person.
3)Mid Career profile change can even be a launching pad (although not universally) to opportunities in Freelancing or even one's own side or main business.
What if we have a great skill in something but people unwilling to hire us because of biases or rules of age, comepnsation or anything else?
Well, we might start something of our own.
Now nothing comes without downs or cons. For such a big decision for Mid Career change, we need to take these factors into account :
1)The risk of not getting adequate or suitable opportunities. Often the marketplace works in a way that suits it.
Hiring Managers and Teams often look for preditcable profiles or folks.
Anything out of the ordinary, or if I say, different from ordinary might not be appreciated or understood.
For example, would one give a chance to a 15 year experienced Line and Staff Manager to work on AI or ML even if he or she has done a wonderful course on that subject?
2)Longer than expected lead time in Freelance or Self Business opportunities- Fine, you have decided to freelance after deciding on a Mid stream change.
Yet you might face rejections, suspicions and disappointments?
Are you ready for that- Financially and emotionally.
Would your family support you?
Often we hear of Family support for many but I do not think that can be taken for guaranteed in every case.
So one could face tremendous pressures and obstacles in such a case.
3)Loss of a steady income- Yes, Freelancing and Own Business sound good.
Yet what if one has to leave their lower than expected but steady paying jobs for that?
Will that prove to be a problem if the initial returns from such a venture are not good enough?
Well, it is not a comprehensive list that I have mentioned.
If any of you has such an experience, you might share what you feel.
Or what all you have experienced in your life(s).
