Reading books shapes aspects of our personality: arguments for and against

Postby ptrikha21 » 14 May 2023, 09:01

"Books are a Man's best friend." Goes a saying.
Then, everyone in this world, at least the literate ones would be having a good book collection.
Yet that is not the case.
While many folks are fond of Reading, there are many who either are not at all fond of Reading or leave after some time.
So a statement that Reading books shapes aspects of our personality can come with arguments for and against.
Let's jump into the for and against points for this statement.

For this argument :

1)Reading books be them of Fiction or Non-Fiction variety not only increases our vocabulary but also opens our eyes to different possibilities and in case of Non-Fiction books, we might come to know of a lot of happenings and events that we otherwise might not have known through news or newspapers.

2)When we take up time and a place to sit, relax and read a book, it calms our minds.
I am not sure what chemicals play out in our brains.
Yet the reading would have some positive effect.
It can also calm us and in this Digital heavy world, a means to have a better mind-body balance.

3)Even with Fiction books, the story might have characters with diverse backgrounds.
May be characters from a country different from the reader.
This way the reader can learn how those people live, how they approach different situations in life and so on.
I know that Fiction is Fiction but even that incorporates elements from the real life.
In case of non-fiction too, we could know of the cultural and other elements from folks from the other countries.

4)Often certain books (some controversial)tell us of aspects and facts and figures that common News channels on TV or the Newspapers do not tell us.
This can shape up even the views of public in a Democratic country.

Now what all come up against the statement :

1)Not all books are worth reading and not all books are relevant for all times.
Often some books are hyped up and not reading them could be better than reading the not up to the mark stuff in them.

2)People with long hours of duty plus night shift might lack time and the patience to read a book.

3)Many folks say that they would devote time to money earning things, or watch Movies, listen to songs or see folks dancing.
They evaluate Books in terms of providing entertainment which I don't think books are.
Or perhaps some are psychologically or mentally ingrained to stay away from Books even if they have got big academic qualifications.

4)The availability of Digital Books, Google and other search engines means that one can get a lot electronically rather than go and buy something and then read in the printed form.
I remember that whenever I talked about Technical books with a friend, he used to start searching for a Free Ebook format for the same.

Well, we can perhaps have more arguments for and against but I think that I have covered a lot of ground on this topic.

What do you feel?

Are you an avid book reading person? Or someone who would rather run away from them?

I've never heard "books are a man's best friend", just that a dog is. Maybe it's a thing in other languages.

I enjoy reading. There have been some studies (which I would have to go looking for again) that show that it can help increase a person's empathy towards other people, and of course you do learn things from what your read. For me it's a pleasure.

Re. this part, you can get reccomendations of what to read based on the kind of books you like. You can read reviews. You can ask at the library, and often they have suggestions displayed. You could google for similar books or books or a particular theme. If you buy books online the algorithm of the seller's site will often suggest similar books.

Ebooks are still books. Reading is reading. Paper books tend to be easier on the eyes than reading from a screen (unless you have an ereader with a special screen), but it's great that you can get many ebooks for free or cheaper than the paper version. I do a bit of both.

The only book I can say that has benefited me is 'Power of Positive Thinking' By Vincent peale. I used to read before Internet made its presence but not any more.

I've read that reading improves people's memory, increases brain power, and even increases empathic abilities. Reading has even been linked to longer life expectancy.

Wow ! That is a thorough and a well thought out response!
Yes even I think that we can utilise the flexibility of eBooks as well as the familiarity and the historical connect of the printed books.

And in terms of for or against book reading, any side you want yo take?
Or are you for a big neutrality in this matter?

So is it a conscious decision by you to give up reading, you somehow lost interest or did the aura of Internet made you give up reading?
Is the book you mentioned an interesting one?

I'm really weirded out that anyone is against the reading of books. I had hoped it was just Kanye West who thought like that.

May be folks are not "against".
They might be neutral, indifferent or slightly opinionated against reading of books.
