Learnings from own Travel experience : Dos and Don'ts for Spring and Winter Hill/Mountain Trips

Postby ptrikha21 » 01 Apr 2023, 15:07

Learning something new is not something restricted to classrooms of Schools or Colleges.
One can keep on learning for life.
The best part is to learn something through one's own experience.

In this spirit, let me tell you about what I learnt from one of my recent trips to a Hill Station nestled in Himalayas.
The place was Nainital in Uttarakhand, a predominantly Mountaineous terrain state with some Foothills and Plain areas in Northern India and neighboring Nepal and China (Autonomous Tibet region).
We went in Mid March. At this time, the weather can be max of 19/20 C and a min of 11 to 12 C and mainly sunny.
Yet it became a rainy season and quite colder. So well, there were quite a lot of things to learn from this trip for Spring, Winter and Rainy season in Hills and Mountains(not covering Mt. Everest though !! :) :

1)Spring season might sound like a time for Full and Half sleeved Shirts or T Shirts.
But well, one should have at least one jacket- with or without a Hoodie, a Raincoat, Umbrella, Snow Boots (for elevations above 2700 M above Mean sea level),some sweaters, extra socks, an extra pair of shoes and extra trousers.
Bravado is good but within limits !

2)Carry chocoloate bars, some biscuits and even Tea sachets (dippable). Plus some sty snacks but which is not too bulky.
They can come handy if it starts to rain heavily, it gets colder and you are in a shelter where instant food is not available. Mind you, we did had this experience. And the chill in the mountain air when it rains even during "Technical Spring Season" can be testing indeed !

3)Make sure that you don't get too wet and if wet, try to replace your wet socks with a dry pair. It can be difficult at times. Plus try to get to a place where there is some Bonfire kind of an arrangement. Locals in such places are generally more helpful than folks in Plains. It can of course vary but it is generally what I have observed.

4)Take appropriate breaks when walking in places with steep gradients. Faster exertions can be hard on one's heath and may be even heart.
No need to rush even if it means changing one's plans.
It is better to stay healthy than feeling exerted.
Plus at higher elevations, oxygen levels are lesser as well, so no use exerting oneself.

5)Enjoy even if the weather changes affect your plans and enjoyment.
If it rains too much or snows, just pause wherever you have to halt and stay and just enjoy the moment.
After all, a Trip or a Vacation means a break from normal and why to keep on fretting !

Of course, other folks among you would have even more experiences to share but I hope all of the above would give you something to ponder over.

Some useful tips there @ptrikha21. When you were at the Hill Station, did you stay in a tent or in more permanent accommodation such as a hotel or guest house?

Thanks Fergal!
We stayed at a Hotel. It was named "Hotel Himalaya".
It was technically off-season but it still costed us INR 5k per day, and as per some estimates, during the peak season of May and June there, rates could be double.
Yet we also have options like Home Stays and Camping arrangements in some places in Himalayas in India.

Yes and apart from good cash and non-cash monetary reserves, keeping such things in mind are pretty helpful as well.

In my case I always make sure my phone is fully charged and I have a back up power supply because long rides can be boring without music, podcasts or movies.

So do you keep a Power Backup for your mobile?
Any recent long trip that you undertook?
