Pop How to increase your chances on getting hired by online magazines as a writer

Postby Netherrealmer » 31 Aug 2022, 12:39

Writing for an online magazine can result in significant financial rewards. It can revolutionize difference in a freelance writer's life because they will finally have a place in which the legitimacy of their articles can be established. Because it took me years of work, sweat, and tears to get to where I am now, I want to offer advice in the hopes that it may make things simpler for other people.

1. Before applying, Make sure you have links to previous articles you had written. Being a writer is like being a model. Models have photo shoot portfolios, an archive of their body of work. For writers, you need links and copies of your previous works because you will give them where you will send your manuscript.

2. Write in the active voice- Most humans in the world speak in passive voice, but the brain responds better with sentences written in active voice. Writing with the way you speak is not going to be helpful. These online magazines have algorithms bias and favor an active style of writing. Algorithms like Yoast favors this style of writing because they have higher readability. That helps them rank higher with Search engines.

3. Take advantage of all the tools available. There is no denying I use Grammarly and Quillbot because they helped me get gigs. English is not my first language, so If I have to use tools to cover my weaknesses, I will.
I learn to write in an active style thanks to their suggestions. I developed a new writing style thanks to the advice given to me by these A.I. There are times when my paragraphs needed to be longer or shorter. The features of these tools helped me big time.

4. Avoid misinformation- I got scolded for using misinformation just because I wanted to clickbait during my early days. You are not a paid troll for a politician, so if you want to be a writer in an online magazine, You need to write honestly with integrity. Give information that you know. Also, give credit to your sources. If the places you apply find an article of yours where someone questions your authenticity, you are screwed.

5. You must know what you are writing about. People will post in the comment section of articles and try to question you; if you do not have receipts, it will undermine your integrity. Since the comment section is an open forum, people will post.

This has been so helpful. I wish I read it earlier before I was banned from a writing site due to automation. Incase I start writing for any company I'll stick to the suggestions outlined.

That's a very insightful article. I used to write for an online magazine called www.4indianwomen.com. And earned well there. But now it has stopped and I really miss it. I would love to know of some good online magazines to write for and the ones that pay. I write for one but there is no upfront payment there. It's not so encouraging to write there.

How do you outreach the editors usually? Do you use any freelancing sites like fiverr or upwork?

Do you rather write lower skills than you have or you increase it?
Are you self confident in skills you have or you think employer will say: 'You don't know as much you think you know'?

Fantastic, I was least aware of these things, and will certainly help me next time when I am going to apply for any such job online or even offline because we need to adapt according to job requirements.

When I was a contributing writer for the below online magazine, we were so close-knit. We had no problems.

Then, out of nowhere, we got dumped.

I was owed almost $300.00. My calls and emails were left unanswered.

Others told me that they were ignored also.

So, just make sure that you have a plan just "in case".

This is very helpful information that most of us overlook, you need to have a competitive advantage because the work that you have, needs to be somewhere hung so that they can trail it and you just need to ensure it is something that they will be willing to pay for. I have learnt quite a lot from this in terms of selling content.

@Spontaneo
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the online magazine, and, unfortunately, you and others faced difficulties with payments and communication. Such situations can be challenging, especially when there's a lack of transparency or responsiveness from the platform.

A good explanation would have been nice.

This is some great advice, I'll have to take it into consideration the next time I apply for something. Unfortunately, other that my guilty pleausre of fanfiction, I don't have any published works other than stuff I wrote for my high school Lit Mag.

I'm not a native English speaker, so I rely on reverso.context spell check to correct my texts. To be hired by online magazines (but first of all I must listen to my accountant, as freelancing in my country is bounded on very cumbersome bureaucracy and tax laws) I'd add LanguageTool to enhance the style.

I'm so sorry too, as 300 dollars are a huge amount of money, depending on the country where you live :( .

My feelings were hurt. He could have atleast told we writers that he would be happy to give a good resume reference.

Honestly, I'm not interested in being an online writer, but for those who are interested, these are very good tips that can work very well.
