Pop On Teaching Your Child How To Cook

Postby Spontaneo » 07 Jul 2022, 05:25

Are you a parent of a child of any age? If so, may I ask you a favor? Teach that child how to cook! Even if the child is a toddler, they can still learn and believe me, they are going to thank you in their own little way!

My history…

My mother never allowed me in the kitchen. The exception? To set the table. She was always afraid that I would get hurt by the stove/oven.

When I grew up and on my own, she gave me a Crock-Pot. The gift that kept on giving! I borrowed cookbooks from the library and bought cookbooks from yard sales. My friends started to call me the “Crock-Pot Queen”. I did it! I then ventured to my next skill… the stove/oven.

However, my mother’s worst fear came true. One day, I was attempting a new recipe called Cauliflower Pizza. Some grease from the pizza tray caused a fire. Luckily, my roommate was able to contain the fire to the oven only.

I swore to myself to never use the oven again. I haven’t.

Make sure that you supervise them until you are sure as sure that they can do it unattended.

The basics…

Start off with the microwave! Then, the Crock-Pot! If you are accident prone, these are the way to go! I still like no-bake desserts!

The benefits…

Everybody needs to eat! You are teaching your child how to survive. When I was in high school, I had to choose between home economics or concert band. Can you believe? If anything, I needed both. I was musical. Yet, I needed to know how to provide. So, yes, I chose concert band.

The outcome…

Knowing how to cook is a forever skill!

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! Well, I have been cooking for years now. Where is he? The only people at my kitchen table are 2 girl roommates! Not right!

Over the past 4th of July holiday, I was taught a recipe that I am always going to remember. I was staying with friends. They offered me a plate of Dill Pickle Slaw. It was love at first bite! I am now addicted to the dish! So, today, I went grocery shopping for all of the ingredients and am going to prepare on my own!

Finally, in the past, I have used Xerox copies of recipes as stationary. I would write to friends and family on one side and they could learn a new recipe on the reverse side.

Can you tell that I like talking about food?

I hope that you take my advice.

Thanks for posting your article Spontaneo. I'm actually not familiar with crock-pots, do they make it easy to cook simple and healthy meals?

Sorry Fergal. I attempted to give you an example but do not know how!

-- 07 Jul 2022, 17:00 --

There! I did it! Sorry!

Crock-Pots are round appliances that range in all different sizes.

You throw your ingredients in for example in the morning and your meal is ready and waiting for dinner!

Some are manual and some are digital

But yes, it does all of your cooking.

Does this make sense? If not, just ask.

My mother taught me how to cook when i was a teen, because she said that she was afraid i do not know how to cook for my hubby. I taught my kids to cook when they were tall enough to see the wok because our stove was on high table.

Learned how to cook in 5th grade because of home economic class. My mom thinks men dont need to learn how to cook.

My daughter has to know how to cook especially since she's a girl, and later on she'll have to cook for her family. I do try and show her how to cut onions and tomatoes each time I'm cooking. I wish she could learn also how to clean after herself. She rarely does the dishes.

We rarely do takeouts so cooking her is a must for each and every one that lives in our homestead.

I was taught how to cook at am early age. Its really great. But I was warned never to use a crock pot. It was always hidden so that I don't have access to it. But still I dnf tstop me from learning and mastering the art of cooking.

My mom did this, my brother enjoyed it, I didn’t, but I’m thankful she did, bc it has helped me through some tough years and I was able to at least make food for myself. Also it’s really tough to watch an adult who can’t even cook 1 or 2 simple things for themselves or might lose his finger when told to peel a potato.

May I ask the reason of not utilizing a Crock-Pot?

Have you tried an air fryer? It is awesome, you can enjoy "deep fried" stuff without oil.

Our air fryer paid for itself in one use! We cook everything in it! My favorites are Angus burgers and french fries. How about you?

The roommates always put pizza in the air fryer to make the crust extra crispy.

I could never eat duck, rabbit or camel.

I do like potatoes though.

As for popcorn, I use the microwave.
