Nightmare of many Parents: A son or daughter wants a career in Arts

Postby Netherrealmer » 12 Nov 2021, 18:10

The majority of parents don't want their kids to pursue arts because of the notion that artists live in poverty and will depend on their parents even as adults. I can say that is the case 20 years ago but not anymore. If your kid loves and breathes arts and will rather commit suicide than pursue a course of medicine in law, there is no way you can stop them. They already got the epiphany and that is their passion.

This song is inspired by the tragic life of Vincent Van Gogh, A talented painter who lived a miserable life in poverty until the day he committed suicide. Then after his death, his paintings become the most expensive art in the world.

If your kid's passion is art instead of Academics, Here are things you can do so they won't be living in poverty while waiting for their big break.

Encourage them to take a short course in graphic design.

Graphic designers make a lot of money. It is also right in their alley. Tell them to do graphic design gigs online or even as a professional while they are waiting for their art to be discovered. There is a demand for Graphic designers so the struggling artist can do these gigs while waiting for their big break.

Make them upload pictures of their art on social media.

A lot of painters upload their arts on Instagram and many of them reached the same monetization Instagram models have. Others upload arts on Deviantart as a way to make people subscribe to their Patreon. Other artists also upload their art on their blogs. A picture paints a thousand words so it can get more attention than a text-based blog. Other artist records how they make art on Youtube and Tiktok and manage to monetize the videos. If they reach enough fame, they can sell their art as NFTs. Though Onlyfans is usually associated with Pornstars and D-list celebrities, Artists are also taking advantage of it. Yes, some people make money with Onlyfans by making art.

Do online art jobs

If you cant get viral, You can offer your services as an artist to Fiverr. Many artists are making cash on Fiverr because there is a customer-based looking for graphic designers, Book Covers, company logos, Portrait paintings, etc. I paid an artist from Fiverr to make a book cover for my yet-to-be-finished Ebook. Some artists have to hold their accounts because they have an overwhelming number of gigs. The Internet makes the lives of artists better these days. If Artists know how to use the internet, They won't be bums that still live with their parents.

You didn't mention NFTs. Isn't that the way it's going these days?
I saw an article where teenage artists are making millions with the NFT technology. I don't know what NFT (non-fungible tokens) is all about. But parents these days need to stop living in The Dark Ages. If the kids are keeping up, the kids probably know how to make money better than their parents ever did!

Oh I forgot about NFTs, I think it is something artist should pursue once they have some kind of notoriety or fame. It did made rich people out of some artists.

Van Gogh wasn't unhappy because he was an artist. He suffered from mental illness for his whole life.

Your suggestions are cool, though that's not going to work for everyone. Graphic design is a whole separate skill set from what's used in some other visual arts (speaking as someone who can paint but who never really got good at graphic design). But it wouldn't hurt to suggest it and to encourage it if they're into it.

'The arts' is pretty broad, and there are quite a few ways to make a career in the arts- makeup artistry, character design, animation, all kinds of music (performance, composition etc) and dance, acting and writing. It always has been, and always will be, a bit of a dicey way to make a living.

One of my nephews was always gifted in the arts. He was an excellent painter, sculptor and excelled in many art projects all through school. He always wanted to use his artistic skills in a future career. Well, he succeeded beyond anyone's expectations.

He went through his college years to learn his trade and is now listed in his career journals as one of the top 5 dental surgeons in the US. He rebuilds people's faces particularly after they were disfigured in car accidents, using his artistic skills so there is rarely ever any evidence they were ever injured after he was done.

An artistic career can become a huge success with the right direction.

An artist career is bound to be a success with good backing and strategy. I am an artist because I play musical instruments professionally. And it is very readily of you are good and have the right exposure.

Art has now become a profitable career these days. While you will still struggle if you are into fine arts but if you explore digital art and NFT, you can become rich

AI became a threat to artists though, AI can steal your art style without permission.

This court ruling in the US decided that copyright only applies to art that's created by a human. If that becomes the norm everywhere it will protect artists to some extent.

It should not be the case but yes, even now, Arts as a full time career is looked down upon in India.
I remember a TV Program that used to be aired in India from 2016 to 17.
In that, the son of a Top ranked Businessman had interest in Paintings and Sculptures.
He sets his own space for promoting his Arts and training others.
Yet, his father always looked down upon him, wanted him to join the Business so as to get an advantage over his brother and nephew, who were more deeply into Business.
There was always a friction between them.

It was fiction but showcased the still prevailing reality.
Yet now the options of Fiverr and NFT look promising.

I can understand their fear and concern though. Over here those who are artist don't really make much money.
