How to prevent being Bullied at work

Postby Netherrealmer » 27 Oct 2021, 07:00

The workplace is like an extension of high school. I was never bullied at work, but I had seen people who got bullied at work. There is a hierarchy and people can be aggressive trying to protect their place. There is a way to prevent being a target. Here is what I did so I avoided getting bullied at work.

1. Look Confident and act confident. Confidence is your shield from being seen as an easy target. If you look too vulnerable people can see you as an instant errand person to do their jobs for them. Acting, Meek and shy will make you an instant target for your predatory coworkers. One way to be confident is to love and respect yourself. How you treat yourself will reflect on how others will treat you.

One thing you need to remember though is there is a difference between confidence and arrogance. Do not cross the arrogant territory either because it will step on people's feet.

2. Be unapologetic- If you care too much about your reputation, a simple rumor based on lies can easily be used to throw you under the bus.No unjustified criticism can phase you if you don't care what they think.
3. Try to make friends but with caution, the more the better. Most bullies at the workplace have friends. Be kind but make sure your kindness wont be a weakness. Yes, you have to make friends but do not make friends with toxic people who will treat you like a doormat. Those are not real friends but bullies in disguise. Once you surround yourself with good people, You instantly have the protection you needed because workplace bullies don't target someone with lots of friends.

4. Don't be late- A person who is always late instantly becomes a social pariah at the workplace. Not only it annoys your superiors, but you also alienate your, would-be peers.
5. If you have ambitions to climb the corporate later, Make sure to not tell anybody about it. A lot of people at work want promotion and if you announced that you are competitive, You are walking on thin ice.
6. Avoid polarizing topics- Politics and religion will make you a lot of enemies. Avoid debating people at work as much as possible.
7. Befriend your boss-This may sound like sucking up but the people you need to be closest to the most are your superiors. They are the protection you needed.

I agree with your points. Being firm and steadfast are some points which help to make a person looks confident and not easily bully by others. Polite and friendly personality give others the opportunity to bully the newbies

There is no way you can actually avoid bullying. Bad people are everywhere. The best way to tackle this is don't give a damn, and just do your work.

Good points, but also, if you are at a workplace where you have to pay attention to all this just to avoid getting bullied, that's not a very good work environment. And often bullying is out of our control. Luckily, I haven't encountered bullying since I was in middle school - which also says something about the maturity of those who bully others as an adult.

No one bullied me when I started showing confidence in my own skin. Bullies only targets the weak. A person who thinks they will get bullied will get bullied.

I was bullied at work once. I was new to the job and it is difficult to assert yourself if you don't know what you are doing. One woman took great pleasure in making me feel stupid and it was embarrassing.

After a few weeks I was talking to my friend who said "she's bullying you. Ask her what her problems is with you". So I did. She went bright red and couldn't answer but assured me she didn't have a problem with me. It stopped from that moment forward so confronting the bully worked in my case.

I later learned I wasn't the only one she had treated this way and she was a rather unpopular person.

Sometimes, being angry at them but not in an aggressive way will stop them to bully you. At least, they know they crossed a boundary and would avoid bullying you.

I was bullied at a job. I was a barista yet the supervisor and manager always gave me the janitorial work. If I even left one piece of dirt on the floor, I was made to sweep again. My back felt like it wanted to break. I just wanted to write full-time. Yes, I am a people pleaser but no more. I went to quit and explain but was told not to give excuses. I was told to just say that I did not want to work. I quit then and there. I have been so happy.

Here's the main thin you need to remember:
Your co-workers at the job are NOT the ones paying you!! Don't let them provoke you into doing something that could cause you to lose your job. You might get fired for reacting to their bullying, even though it's their fault. They will still show up for work every day. Do you think they will care if you're homeless???

Also ... I have to say this for the Americans ... DON'T GO POSTAL!! Don't go home and then come to work to a gun and shoot whoever you see!!

I really was bullied and know what it really feels like. It was a blessing that I left.

Tomorrow is the cafe's Christmas dinner for employees and I feel kind-of sad. Although work was awful, the Christmas dinner was special. We all got along.

When people come to work - assuming they don't own the business - they are only there to work, and get paid to support their family. Yeah sure! It might be a career move and you can climb up the ladder of success. But if you are enduring bullying at work, and the management is not doing anything to stop it ... your best bet is to LEAVE! I know that's not easy to do because a lot of people can't easily find another job. If that's the case with you, then steel yourself to face work every day, do your best to make it through the day, and when you leave work to go home ... LEAVE IT! Do not bring the bad experiences at work home with you!

I think it'll be hard to avoid bullying coz each individual you meet in the workplace will be diverse.

Bullies are there in every place and there is no age when you won't face bullies. You have given some very nice tips. And you are so right when you talk about the limit of confidence. If one oversteps that and becomes arrogant, one might be joining the lines of the bullies.

I think you have mentioned a very essential key component for one to use while on the workplace for the first time. Being confident does not protect one to being bullied but also to keep them on toes and familiarisation of the job.

This seems like good advice. You might still get bullied at work anyway, through no fault of your own, but this will probably help your chances.

I think some female coworkers start bullying me. They do jokes on purpoes talking about my personal life even they know I don't like that. Often I go in my cabinet and don't talk with anybody but they are good looking so my eyes like their decoltage. It is hard not to watch.
