Pop Things you cannot do with the internet anymore

Postby Netherrealmer » 08 Jun 2021, 14:18

The internet is an ever-changing world and 10 years from now, we may never recognize the Internet the way we remember it. I remember there used to be a thing called Online anti-virus. An antivirus you don't need to download. It will check your pc remotely. I miss them because all of them have turned into the software I needed to download. Now if you want an anti-virus you have to download the antivirus. I do have an installed antivirus back then but I loved those online anti-viruses as a second opinion.

Back then when I was younger, You can make an email address with Gmail with your PC alone. Now you will be forced to enter a mobile phone number or else they will block you. I hate that phones became mandatory. I do have a smartphone but I don't need the apps they are forcing me because I prefer the pc version.

Oh, social networks back then also required email only but now having a mobile number is being forced by hook or by crook. Many services force people to have a mobile number. This makes it harder for people who don't want phones. You cannot even be exempted from it anymore. It has become mandatory and they will not leave you alone with notifications until you gave in. My Paypal got held hostage for days because I refused to enter a phone number but I gave in because I have no more choice. Phones have become mandatory. My fear is in the future services will force us to download their mobile apps even though we want to use them on pc.

Forum searching use to be possible with Google. If you want to find posts and discussions in forums and want to read them, that use to be an option but Google removed that. The removal of forum search in Google and other search engines is the reason why many forums have a drop in traffic because lurkers use to see them easily in search engines. A social network post is more likely to appear in a social network post than a forum post. I am a forum owner and I am going to tell you that my money maker is not a member but the lurkers who find the site via google search. I lost 70 percent of the lurkers when the Forum search was removed by Google.

We can filter search results via dates but back then there is an option for the oldest search result. As in search results from the 90s but Many search engines just removed that option. Your time options left are the Last 24 hours, Last week, Last Month, and Last Year being the oldest.

Before you can share Youtube videos that you like on Facebook. Many people used it to promote their channels but now Facebook is competing with Youtube. You cannot link Youtube videos anymore. You have to upload videos directly to Facebook because they have their video monetization program now.

This I didn't know and will confirm in a moment.

Yes, all that forcing phone number out of people feels like physical assault. You want to give your number to who you want to give it to, not to who forces you to. I guess you have the option of not using their service, or do you? That's why competition is good. When it's obvious that you 'need' them they carry on with this behaviour. There are other ways to verify an account or contact a user than by his phone number.

Everything keeps changing and evolving and so does the Internet. We read the definition of the Internet as an international network of computers. But now it is not only desktop computers but so many of your other gadgets that are there on that network. And smartphones have become one multitasking gadget. I remember when I was young cyber cafes were mushrooming business everywhere. We could access the internet there at an hourly rate. Now the internet is in every house and in every lap and palms. :D

I also have issues with phone number rules imposed by these sites. I once bought a new SIM. When I began receiving facebook notification on this number, I was surprised because I wa snot using this number on my facebook. when I check the link I received in the text message, I reached someone else's facebook. The number seem to have been use by previous owner for his facebook account. This happened just because this person associated phone number to his facebook

The reason for phone number compulsion by google for setting up an account is for security reasons. It help secure your account online while you are offline. If they noticed a login from an unknown device , they will quickly send you sms to notify you of an unusual login

This is interesting. I did not know there was a video monetizing programme on Face Book. Do they have a special niche just to upload videos and can we upload directly from our folder even though they have been uploaded on youtube. I am a partner with youtube but have not earned a penny there.

Yes, initially even I hated that phone number was made mandatory for opening Gmail account. But now I think it is not a bad idea after all from security point of view.

The internet revolution is not stagnant. Whether it is positively or negatively there will always be changes and this is mostly due to increased cybercrime.

Unfortunately, as technology continues to evolve, it's not uncommon for companies to prioritize mobile-centric approaches to user authentication and engagement. However, it's important for these companies to consider the needs and preferences of all users and to offer alternative methods of account verification or communication where feasible.

I was not aware of the fact that searching for forums on google was possible and now they have blocked it. This is a new information for me. I started using online forums only in 2020.

You can fill in a much younger birthday. Just make it seem you are 14 years old when opening an email address and they won't ask for your phone number.

I began using the Internet in the early 1990s. One of the things I recall back then was that a lot of what you might think are limited to what they now call the "dark web" was readily available to all in a stumble over kind of search. Google did not exist at the time and searching for content was much more difficult. You often stumbled over sites you were not expecting in random searches. Now you can find almost anything except what they limit to the dark web with ease.

There has been a steady stream of changes over the years since then. Some more limiting and some much more expansive. I would most certainly expect some things you used to use are no longer available while some surprises with new services and options come up with every upgrade. Life always changes. You just have to learn to grow with it.

That's obviously how much the internet has evolved over time. We are still going to get more limited as time goes on.
