Cooking channels on Youtube

Postby Netherrealmer » 11 Sep 2020, 04:31

The majority of the channels I am subscribed too with Youtube are cooking channels. I just like learning new recipes from around the world and It also helps me feel hungry before eating. I don't like watching Mukbangs because they tend to look gross. I enjoy seeing people cook more. This article is based on my observation of popular channels that got monetized and unpopular channels that are not monetized.

Do not make Verticals videos and upload them as Horizontal

This is not TikTok, this is not Vine! Youtube videos are not meant to be vertical. The algorithm will not favor you if your video looks like it is from TikTok. I know you are more comfortable handling your phone vertically but please don't do it. How many top Youtube stars are known for vertical videos? None! look at these 2 videos both are rabbit meat dishes and one of them is a vertical video and the other is widescreen videos. Look at which ones have more views!

Auntie Susan will not monetize you with vertical videos.
Look her eyes are Horizontal.

The only way she will favor Vertical videos is if she looks like this.

Do not use copyright music, Actually do not add music at all!

Cooking videos have something in common with Porn videos. What do they have in common? The popular ones stopped using music altogether. Copyrighted music can get you banned on youtube or demonetized. Royalty-free music will annoy your viewers. Not adding music also gives you the ASMR community, they love the sizzling sounds of oil and the chopping sounds of knives. Music will interrupt those sweet sounds. You can only use music for your intro and opening but not for the whole video.

Do not use Alexa and Microsoft Sam to talk to you.
If you have mic skills go ahead use your voice but if you are too shy to talk just use subtitles. People hate robot voices so either use your real voice or do not talk at all and just use subtitles.

Either use your voice:

Or do not talk at all and let the subtitles do the talking.

Longer videos make more money!
Youtube Algorithm wants the videos to be at least 9 minutes long. This is the reason why many cooking channels have fillers now. Unnecessary scenes like washing vegetables are added to make sure the video is long because longer videos get more ads and recommendations.

Do not have children on your videos. With Coppa infesting Youtube right now. It is better to have no kids on your videos. I don't care if you are a mom who wants your kids to help you with the kitchen. Hide them from the cameras. Do not show them on screen. It is instant demonetization, especially if you are a smaller Youtuber. Just because you see big Youtubers showed their kids it doesn't mean you should too. Big Youtubers have protection from Aunt Susan.

Use attractive kitchen wares and Utensils.

Plastic bowls, Old Knives, and rusty kitchen sheers will be a huge turn off to the audience. Use attractive looking kitchenwares.

Quite good tips. We did follow some of these when making recipe videos. Currently however, we have been away from making new videos, as we have been pretty much caught up in many different kinds of offline and online works.

Can cooking Youtubers be sued by some company if they in video say some product is bad, like vegeta has too much salt and too little vegetables or meat bought in store was not fresh?

Not at all, remember product review is a genre on Youtube and many audiences wants to find honest reviews.

But what if review is wrong or chef didn't check product quality and read instructions and give bad review even product is done by standard on declaration papers? In that case, chef is wrong. Can he be sued?

Thanks for sharing :) Fantastic pointers you've shared there! I know the article was probably not meant to be funny but I had a few giggles. That comment; 'it also helps me feel hungry before eating' was hilarious because half the time I'm fighting the urge to eat  But I also enjoying watching the cooking channels because I learn so much.

What will you do if you wake up in the middle of the night and Vertical video lover Susan is in front of you? I enjoy watching recipe videos over Mukbang. Mukbang is like a gross sex fetish to me.

It's good to know that like to watch cooking videos. Yes, watching someone, especially a good looking female can surely make you very hungry. I prefer to watch easy to cook vegetarian recipe videos on YouTube only. I'm not a good cook myself, so I don't think I will ever be able to start a cooking channel of my own.

It's interesting to know you love cooking. Food is a very sensitive subject, from the preparation time to the presentation of the food that is what will make people watch your videos and also have the interest to learn your cooking skills. I also love watching them and learn a few food tricks here and there very good stuff. but a messy kitchen is a total turn off.

All excellent tips! Vertical videos? So that's what it's called. I didn't know there was a name for it. I just knew it was annoying. I agree with you about the kids. Not on YouTube. If you have a popular TV show like Jacques Pepin or Lidia Bastianich, you can bring your kids or grandkids on the show. I've gotten used to seeing them on the show. But not on YouTube.

Interesting. I always hated, well, "Videos that are vertical" i had no idea Youtube Algorithm hate them too! Unfortunately, some of them are usually very nice. As in, the content of the video is good, but the presentation is poor. Well said. Nice read.

Oh! It's an interesting tips, I'm also intended to start my own cooking channel, but I'm still looking for a way to have time for it because my work takes a lot of my time even whenever I get home everyday, I just sleep off anyhow. I don't even have time for some other things. I hope it ends soon

You will rarely see ads in vertical videos. If they like vertical videos so much they should stick with tiktok.

I hope these tips will help your channel, specially the Horizontal video one. Youtube hates vertical videos. One of my favorite channels got demonetized after the owner decided to make all videos vertical.
