Pop Future vision: Covid-19 fallout on Global Sports and how technology can help manage it

Postby ptrikha21 » 19 Apr 2020, 13:26

Disclaimer:
A lot of what is in this article is based on the current pandemic fallouts Technological developments and what "we could see" in the future.
Many things are not yet there, but they could be possible in near and not so near future.

Olympics 2020. Host Nation: Japan.
Japan had been preparing for this gala event since a long time.
A big stage for athletes from around the world. Dreams, passions of many.
Years of preparation. Yet, under the current situation, it has been postponed by a year.
So has been the big money spinner IPL, as well as major Football events.
French Open and Wimbledon too look likely to be canceled.

So, what does future holds for Sports events?

Do they face major losses?
Would athletes have to start looking elsewhere?

Well, Technology can help.

First, Technology can be used to create more structures so that a stadium can be used as an outdoor as well as indoors.
The benefit: Players can be provided some air conditioning if temperatures outside go beyond 40 C and humid, as well as when they dip too much.
This way, they won't fall ill, and infections would be kept at bay.

Secondly, apps can monitor whether players are keeping healthy. Any pre match day illness can be guaged and treated accordingly.

Mobile Apps as well as Booking software can be adjusted to have only half of a stadium full, at least for a year or so.
It would no doubt decrease Organizers' profits, but better to aim for disease and infection control. Repeat viewers could even be assigned to certain seats through these systems.

Stadiums need to be redesigned in a way that the players and audience get various facilities like handwash, sanitizers etc at appropriate places.
Visualization techniques can be used in such redesigning.

Lastly, security teams can also be retrained along with medical teams on standby in case of any unexpected infection spread, or security threats.

Websites and Apps can be used by Organizers to conduct viewers' interest surveys, quiz etc to get Internet based Ad revenues as well as keep the viewers engaged.

Of course, some of these things are already in different stages and perhaps we could see more of these in the future.

So, what is your view on the overall scenario in global sports?

This virus will change sport at big. It will past at least year to two until everything will be back in normal. We already see how small numbers of clubs have money for players salary even they value is in millions. That part will be changed at big. I think we will se some new some sports but with bigger social distance. It will be less contact sport or they will ad different shirts to cover body more.

What league? I know only Belarus is active and few more. It is weird to watch game where you can hear a coach yell on players.

I voted one year. I am not sure about higher athletic events but here in the Philippines, the regionals which was supposed to be held last March or April was tentatively moved to December while the nationals is cancelled.

A player suggested using virtual reality to engage audience. Yet many say that sports might not be possible before 1 year.

There could be a possibility of some sports events starting from October. Yet, nothing is certain.

If they have been away from other public and have not traveled recently, just before lockdowns, then it is fine.

I am not getting used to watching sports and competitions with no audience. Heck most tv shows right now are glorified video chats.

I heard rumors of Miss Universe 2020 being held on Zoom so contestant wont need to leave the country. How are they going to crown the winner? Via filters? Swimsuit and evening gown will be pre-recording on setting of contestant's choice and Q and A will be done via Zoom chat.

NBA now have audience via Zoom

So, Zoom is going strong even with controversies and Technological flaws.
Yet the contest would be interesting to watch.

I think Covid-19 pandemic has dealt severe blow to those involved in professional sports including players, organisers and advertisers. The IPL has started, but it lacks charm, without those noisy, boisterous, cheering spectators.

Digital audiences should be chosen meticulously because a man showed his privates in the middle of a sports game.

XXXII Summer Olympic (Tokyo 2020) is postponed to July 2021. If things do not get normal, such video audience will be there then. Olympic is not a private company to tolerate such behavior.

Yes, such things do happen in a Digital world. And there are issues in Online Zoom classes for kids as well.

From what I read in news, Japan would perhaps go ahead with Olympics next year, even with low attendance and lesser number of sports. Yet things could change as well.

Still IPL has had some matches of great intensity. Some have gone to Ties and Super overs.
Also, with the help of Technology, they create artificial noise of the audience, may be mainly for the entertainment of the TV audience.

Sounds very shocking! Was his footage removed later?
