4 Google Account Settings You Should Apply for Better Account Security

Postby skysnap » 23 Aug 2019, 20:11

Google accounts are very important if you have them synced with your phone. So you may want to keep more security enabled if you wish to have control over your account. And this means you have to make a lot of settings that can make your account more secure. In such case you may have to do settings that add more burden to your workflow. But that part is necessary to have more account security. Here are some of the settings that you can do with google account.

Remove 3rd Party Access

Your android phone may have access to many other 3rd party apps. I recommend keeping different account for the android phone. And different account for the phone access. This way you can easily manage the 3rd party access. And in such context you can limit who is accessing your phone and other data. I have seen that in such case you can revoke access to some of the apps and get control over your account back.

2 Step Verification

This setting allows you to verify it's your identity being checked before or after the login to specific Google apps. You can use this across all the google apps. And this feature is extremely handy for the mail users. I'd recommend you to check out this option if you need more security. Do note that they may send you SMS or allow you to make use of the Google authentication app to generate the 2 factor codes.

Recovery Phone & Email

You may want to connect additional account email and the phone number. This feature is being used so that if you lose the account access, you are not going to be locked into the account. And that should protect you in case you lose the secret question and the password. In such case getting access to your new settings is only possible through these options. I would recommend you to check out this setting and see if you can make use of it for your safety.

Enable IP Address Notifications

Google keeps log of where you are logged in and out. So they can show you when the new IP address is detected for access to your account. I'd recommend you to check this option and get notified when you want to see if anyone else logged into your account. You can also get notified about the same on mail or say even in the app notifications. It can be definitely useful for you to make use of these settings.

I hope some of these options are useful to you to secure the account access. Let me know if you find those account settings useful and gives you more control over the account. So I hope you find more additional settings that you can use to protect the google account be it on web or the mobile. Let me know if you know any other settings that can protect the google account.

I am using most of these options. It is always better to follow good security norms and be safe, but sometimes we might neglect a few areas.

It seems like the IP address notification is an auto feature. I don't remember ever setting that one up but everytime I log in with an unknown (to them) device/IP a notification comes in immediately. The 2-step verification is definitely a wise idea. Unless they have access to your phone (or whatever 2nd method) it will be a hard task to get in.

Another important security measure is regularly reviewing your account activity and permissions. Take time to audit the apps and services connected to your Google account. Remove any that you no longer use or don't recognize to minimize the risk of unauthorized access.
