Pop How to prevent ankle twisting

Postby Netherrealmer » 18 Apr 2019, 15:30

This injury is one of the worst experiences of my life because I was so immobile for 2 months and I got another 2 months when I end up in an accident again. I tried to internalize why am I so accident prone? Few days ago I made an article on how to make recovery from ankle injury heal faster. Now I want to give some tips on how to

Look where you step!!

Tripping is one of the most common cause of broken ankles. I own a farm and you can imagine all the errands I do in the morning. You have to watch where you step, what is beside you, behind you and ahead of you when you walk. Our head is like a 360 camera and you have to take advantage of that ability so you wont end up tripping. I broke my ankle twice from tripping. First from stepping on a rough terrain, next is stepping on a slippery apricot fruit that fell from the tree. You have eyes and use them so you wont end up tripping on a tree branch or stepping on a banana peel.

If you are walking a complicated terrain like a hill or a field full things that can trip you, Walk around with a long stick like cane or a staff. Your umbrella may also do.

Walking with a stick can help you regain your balance and recover instead of falling if you end up tripping or losing your balance. I have no accidents on my farm while shepherding ever since I walk around with a staff. From slippery muddy grounds to a rock you wont notice, a staff or a cane will help you regain your balance.

Stretch before you exercise and also exercise regularly.

Image

Before you do a heavy labor, Before you do some physically demanding exercise, You needed to stretch. Stretching strengthens the muscles from your joins making it stronger. Stronger joins means less sprain during accidents. You also need to exercise because people who have stronger musles are less accident prone in the extemities especially the ever sensitive ankle.

You can either install anti-slip tiles on your bathroom floor or if you have a shorter budget buy some anti slip floor mats.

Smooth tiles are very slippery and many people had broke their legs, arms or ankle by slipping on the wet floor. Worst case scenario , some people even died because their head hits the floor first.

You have to choices to prevent the bathroom accidents.

You can either replace your tiles with these textured anti-slip tiles

Or you can install these chip anti slip mats on your current bathroom floor.

If you don't have budget for that, Instead of using the bathroom barefooted, wear an anti slip sandal.

Basically a sandal with a flat and textured heel. The texture under will save you from slipping.

Prevention is better than cure they say and it's true. The first tip you gave kind of reminds us to slow it down and be conscious of what we are doing. We take so much for granted running around without paying attention. At some point we'll have to pay the price. I like these tips you shared here. Even though those smooth and shiny tiles are so beautiful, I agree that they are the source of many such accidents.

Thank you for the tips. I am an early riser coz I have to look after grandma then few errands before going to work. Waking up early sometimes lost my balance in both feet. Stretching helps in starting my early chores.

It's better to be safe than sorry. The shiny ones probably even look better to the eyes but I know how dangerous they can be.

Re: How to prevent ankle twisting

I have twisted both of my ankles twice, and both times it was both ankles.

The first time at age 10, I slipped on a wet grassy hill at a family vacation resort and went rolling to the bottom. It just so happened there was a concrete bench at the bottom. My feet were on one side of a concrete leg and the rest of me was on the other. I hit and twisted both ankles on the leg. I hobbled around with crutches for months and the swelling never has completely subsided even now.

The second time I was 17 and just starting at college. My dorm, room was just a couple of doors away from the exit door. I watched several classmates come running down the hall, jump up just in time to kick the exit door open and then continue running on past the door. It looked fun. I gave it a try, but did not know the maintenance department had just repaired the latch. I immediately fell to the floor and discovered I had again twisted both ankles. The right ankle gave me a lot of trouble for the next few months and I went to the doctor to see why. Seems I had actually broken the right ankle in that stupid act and since I didn't get it reset then, it healed crooked and I walk with a crooked foot to this day.

In my opinion, you can avoid twisting your ankles by trying not to be stupid.

When performing heavy labor or exercises, using proper form is essential. Incorrect posture or movement can strain muscles and joints, leading to injuries.

Taking good care of yourself is most important and if you like to be more careful then buy shoes which can keep your feet and ankles more comfortable

No matter how many times you read these tips, you are bound to forget them and then twist your ankle. In my experience, this usually happens when you are trying to hurry and are not in control of your body.

If you walk alot or run daily then you can experience this problem and if you are clumsy and lazy then also you can experience this. Better to move slowly and place your footing carefully

After a certain age it has more to do with balance, people lose balance more easily, vision is no longer the same and bones are also more fragile, it is much easier to twist an ankle when we are older.

As we get older our bodies certainly go through many changes. Taking some oxtail soup is good for the bones.

So yeah, after a certain age, it's all about finding that sweet spot between staying active, being mindful.

Those are more prevent tricks like in title than recovery like in this sentence. Prevent and recovery are two different things.
So far I didn't had any problems with ankles but my knees are sometimes in pain. I guess few extra kilos plus sitting in front of computer affect on it.

If excess weight is contributing to your knee pain, consider adopting a healthy diet and exercise routine to manage your weight. @Mrki444

Try walk on this. I remember as kid we used play on this fields. Also grow people walk trough it so they can work. Sometimes as shortcut to next field. Still there was less ankle twisting than now.

No matter what the decision, focusing on well-being in a possibly risky region like a restroom is excellent.
Non-slip coatings can be applied generally rapidly, limiting interruption.

I think replacing tiles in the bathroom is a good option for everyone.
