If you will watch a video about the internet during the 90's you will be confused how different internet was back then. Websites are still relevant there is no social media yet. People are also more active when it comes to using their emails. These days most people are more interested with social networks when it comes to communicating. Only older people and business owners uses emails as most people prefers being contacted via facebook messenger or an app like whatsApp.
Email greeting cards Do you still remember those websites you can use to send digital greeting cards to your loved ones? Many people thought the digital animated greeting cards will put the greeting cards business obsolete but guess what paper greeting cards are still relevant while most people don't use email greeting cards anymore because Millennial people hate emails . They find them spammy. If you want to greet a friend for his birthday, either use the messenger of a social network or an app. I think these digital greeting cards are popular during 90's and they died down around mid 2000's.
Yahoo groups
These online clubs use to be a place where people can talk about anything they are a fan of. From a TV show to a musical band. Everything have a fan's club. They evolved in some form with Facebook groups and Amino but yeah Yahoo groups use to be super relevant.
Pass this on - this website still exist but it is not the email chain mail passing website anymore. Pass this one is a chain email site where you can find something funny or cool to your friend's emails.
I cannot find any picture of these type of websites anymore. They are like memes before memes existed. They are animated video parodies you will pass to your friends via emails when emails are still cool. This won became viral via emails before Youtube existed:
If you notice the humor of 90's internet is considered offensive by today's standards because of people being woke of social justice.
They also have these sketch and camera pranks, I remember one of their pranks is telling you that your monitor will work as a camera and will take your picture. They will ask you to smile and no matter what happen the results will look like this:
Emails use to work like social networks before, people had been using them a lot when pass this on was still relevant. It died down when the Social Network friendster became popular.... Which is ironic because friendster is gone too. Antivirus websites- I miss this technology so much because you can scan viruses from your computer via browser! No need to download softwares. I use these websites even though I have an installed anti-virus as a way to double check. Having 2 antivirus on your pc at the same time will slow down your pc. The existence of these websites gave me the double check option.
I forgot the name of this website but they decided to become an antivirus you have to download and stop giving free scanning via browser.

Had it not been for this article I never would have remembered those ecards, my word. It used to be so exciting to receive one that I would email them to myself. Lol. The ones with songs included that is. I'm happy they didn't replace the physical cards though.

Yes things change so much. I remember that in early 2000 and till beginning 2001, there was a site Usa.Net on which having an email Id was considered prestigious. And so many people were using Hotmail(India connect - Sabeer Bhatia...)

I remember during those times people predicted that greeting cards will be gone and ecards will replace them. E-cards are gone and greeting cards still exist.

I have almost forgotten those things. Anyway they have served as forerunners of the modern or advanced social interactive programs. I don't know if you happened to know the Friendster, a social networking service before and it is similar to Facebook, but it was closed. It started sometime in 2002.

I mentioned friendster on this article so I know it's fate. It's very sad fate. At least Myspace is popular to hipsters who are not SJW like tumblrinas.

Its really intriguing how things are evolving with time, some for the better but really to render some services extinct is so unfair.Ecards where awesome but not many want to relate to them anymore. Thanks for reminding us what we may have missed and the good thing sometimes is that some other things are just recycled so we may see some other services coming to be trendy in the near future which we thought we buried and long forgot.

I love the irony how real cards outlived e-cards that created the make them obsolete. I was sad when the browser virus scanner was gone because its such a nice benefit. Now all antivirus as softwares to download.
I wish I was alive when customized emails where a trend. they are not a thing anymore.
