Working At Home And Making Time To Exercise

Postby WorkAtHomeGal » 20 Apr 2017, 19:24

This is a habit a lot of us can fall into and that is either not exercising in general enough or not doing it all together. I fall into the category of often just not doing it at all or not enough. I go through phases you could say where I take walks and set up a schedule to follow but with life commitments and other things getting in the way it is easy to let something so important slide.

For those of us who primarily stay at home working or maybe being a stay at home parent it might be time to ask, "How is my health today?" and maybe taking a deeper look into our exercise routine or making one. There is so much that we can do for free that doesn't require any type of membership and I like to be frugal and save money so let's stick to those.

1) Finding The Time - This is one of those situations where time really doesn't seem to ever be enough but at the same time we don't mean to do this but we also may struggle and use the time excuse to just flat out avoid exercising altogether. I know I have done it without even realizing it before than later feeling guilty over it. What I have done is wrote down days I want to exercise in my planner and tried hard to follow it. Or make a list which seems to work too. Today for instance is very slow for me online so I am going for a walk after I write this article.

2) Learning To Exercise Alone - I see so many people refuse to walk because they do not have a walking partner. I don't want to sound rude or pushy but this is probably the worst excuse I have ever heard. I have anxiety and actually prefer walking alone because it gives me a chance to use my MP3 player and not be bothered. So I can listen to music and just relax. I find walking and listening to music to be very relaxing and rewarding as it seems to also improve mood. So try it, just try and do it alone and don't rely on exercise buddies because more often then not those buddies might never want to.

3) Flexible Scheduling - If you work from home and already follow a schedule then this won't be so difficult but if you follow no type of schedule it might be annoying to start. I don't need to write down my daily work routine anymore, just add notes or to do sticky notes as needed. Since what I do would be considered freelancer type of work I can really just make my own hours as I see fit. If you are struggling to find time to exercise try and find a time of day where you normally have some breathing room. Maybe first thing in the morning you do, maybe later in the day you do? Either way try to fit something in. It doesn't need to be a walk though it could be following an exercise video on Youtube, Zumba perhaps or Yoga.

4) Limiting Online Time - If you are like me maybe you spend way to much time online. It does happen we don't mean for it too but it does happen. I have been trying to slowly cut back some of my online time but found myself still sitting maybe reading or coloring. The point of limiting the online time was to be active. I spend a lot of time online to try and make cash mainly and to let myself feel less stressed in certain situations. I do love the outdoors though so the only way to really fix that correctly is to be online less. I actually have errands to do today but also will throw a walk in. Even if it is just 1 lap around the track. Our town has a walking trail which is a great way to fit walks in.

5) Finding Motivation - I hate to say it but sometimes it helps to go watch those depressing videos with a happy ending. You know the ones? The ones where someone struggled and is obese and got fit? Or choose a new life slogan for yourself. One of my favorite quotes is short and simple "Make it happen." Such easy words and thoughts and should be no issue really either. Today being the slow day that it is, is the perfect time for me to start this new motivation for myself and take that walk and feel good afterwards hopefully.

Conclusion

This article in no way is to make anyone feel bad about their weight or health but more a wake up call that just because we work online or the time doesn't seem right, the excuses need to stop. I remember watching an episode of "The Doctors" on Youtube and they had a thin attractive woman on stage, she is one of the lucky ones who can eat anything and not seem to get fat and she doesn't exercise. I know people like that in real life. But it doesn't matter because when you get old, you may feel it.

And we only have one body so abusing it is not worth it. I know I have abused mine and I am only 30 and getting short of breath up a long flight of steps is embarrassing! I will continue doing what I do online but in burst throughout the day to make time for a walk or Zumba (my 2 favorite things).

I am not going in with a weight loss goal either, I just want to be more healthy. Let that be your motivation today, to be more healthy.

It is good to take time to assess our health. Not only physical but mental health as well. Working at home can cause some people to feel rather isolated from the mainstream class of workers who commute on a daily basis and interact with one another. Isolation is even banned in some prisons! It is a good idea to stay connected to others and ensure that we maintain healthy relationships. Research has shown that physical exercise can help to lift our mood. Getting natural light and seeing wide open space outdoors can lift our mood as well. A brisk walk or a run outdoors sounds like a good idea. Working out in a gym will put us in a position for human contact. While some people work from home we should always remember that we are social creatures by nature and human contact should not be taken for granted. While we work from machines, we are not machines and our bodies should not be taken for granted. Just take the time and do make it happen.

good thing about working at home is you can sleep when you are tired, exercise in the morning and evening, without beating the rush hours, you are able to find more time with family members

I appreciate your comment because it reminded me of my own mental health which has in recent years gone downhill to the point of needing medication for it. I feel fine now and am content aside from the odd stress but I can tell you that walk I took yesterday after I wrote this post lifted my mood a lot. The sun, the breeze and fresh air felt very nice. And I have to say it does seem myself especially I do take my body for granted and I only have one, so it seems like a good idea to get going with a routine for physical activity and making it work.

Indeed. One thing I love about doing what I do online is that I can pretty much to be on spouses schedule. His earliest shift is 7am and the latest he ever works is midnight-3am. I am a night owl anyways but I like going to bed around the same time as I sleep better. And when I have days like today where he works most of the afternoon and evening I could easily fit in a walk or Zumba. Youtube is great for finding free videos even for beginner level.

This topic is is 2 years and 3 months old. It's so weird because I was just thinking the other day about how to incorporate some exercise into my sedentary lifestyle. I heard that in nursing homes where they are caring for the elderly they bought Wi Fi and got the senior citizens involved in "Just Dance". That's a fun way to exercise. You don't have to go out and buy a Wi Fi. Some of those fun dance routines are on YouTube. Dancing is fun exercise. If you won't to dance you can always go for a walk. Dedicate one hour in your day to exercise and it will make the other 23 hours of the day more worthwhile.

I love exercising in the house in the mornings and evenings. This has been a routine for me and it has helped me to stay healthy, fit and keep my body youthful. Exercising also helps me fight off anxiety and I get to be mindful the whole as I work online and attend my lectures.

Even if you don't work at home, I think it can be a good thing to try and put aside a few minutes from your day to do some exercises. I have an app on my phone that tells me what to do every day and I'm usually done in about 15-20 minutes

Making time to exercise is important. It is imperative that we take care of ourselves to that we reap the benefits of a healthier body. When working at home this is a good opportunity to work out. It is easier to do so while at home than in an office or other offline setting.

Yes, but less friends and colleague, so limited social circle, so we have to be-friend with ourselves, and do exercise by ourselves too, can't rely on others.
Build up a regular exercise habit is good for a freelancer as we don't have medical coverage.

Coolearner24 recently wrote a good article on exercise and health. Entitled "Two things that are worse for your health than smoking". Moving your body with intent and determination is one key aspect to good health. Longevity has its place.
