How to Answer: What Have You Learned from Your Mistakes?

Postby grecy0905 » 17 Mar 2017, 20:46

Answering question about the mistake that you did from your past job is a common question the HR Managers are to ask during an interview. The objective of this question is to find out how do you handle challenges at work, failures, your decision making, your workflow, and your weaknesses. The guide to answering this question is to be always honest and positive.

Below are the guides in answering this type of question

Set a Specific Story When you did a Mistake at Work
Prepare a detailed story from your past job where you made mistakes about something, either about the work you do or your decision about a project. Share the story but makes sure you will not make it long for the HR Managers are surely focus only on how did you handle it, what did you do, how did you accepted your mistakes, and what improvements you did to make it up for yourself. Everyone is making mistakes and there is nothing wrong with that. What is important is that we learned from it and we adjust ourselves to it. Mistakes make people grow and the experience counts as a perfect guide for future development of a person.

Make an assurance that this kind of mistakes will never be repeated. Assess your mistakes from the past. Make sure that it is work related, not personal. Sometimes they want to include personal mistakes in the questions, like what mistake you have in life, sort of like that. If that question is ask then you might want to prepare to answer this one as well.

Do Not Mention Mistakes that Consists in the Key Strength/Qualities for the Job
Before you apply for the job, you will likely to read the requirements of the job. You will check for the qualities your future employer is looking for. If you think you are fit for a candidate, then you apply. Do not mention mistakes that connect to the qualities they are looking for. If they are looking for someone who has strong communication skills and flexible, you might not want to share mistakes that involve that kind. However, since you need, to be honest, you can tell the truth but make sure you let them know that you are doing your best to not make the same mistake again. Also, include some of the things you did that show how you improve. Assure them that it is not happening again.

Team Mistakes and Learning from it
Not to sound rehearse, but to give you an idea, HR Managers appreciate mistakes that involve a team. As a working professional, everyone has its own story about team mistakes. This is one good story to tell because employers are interested in an employee who are bringing great effort in a team oriented environment. Learning from your mistakes and the mistakes of the others creates a whole new foundation to a certain person. It shows how you grow professionally and your eagerness to learn more.

Remember, this type of question might be very simple in any aspect, but this is what make or break you sometimes in an interview. We should all move on from the mistakes that we did thus look forward to treating this mistakes charged to experience.

You know I don't think I have ever had this asked in an interview before :o
Maybe it is only asked during certain interviews or in certain countries... I have been asked to explain a situation where I rose above the occasion to help the company/customer in some way though. I like the ideas presented here though, I will be keeping these in mind, someday an interview person might ask me.

I was asked this type of question a lot of time, especially when I am applying for Business Process Outsourcing before. This type of company is a team oriented environment, maybe that is the reason I was asked. It is a nice tips for me. I don't know how to answer this question before but when I read this, I know my answer is halfway right to what the HR Manager is looking for.

It sounds like an administrative hearing questions. Good point on setting a specific story to tell - it may sound canned story but by telling what improvements have been done would greatly impact the totally of the interview. Great job!

I have a lot of catching up to do here. I will just pop on your posts one at a time.
