How to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

Postby skysnap » 06 Mar 2017, 07:54

Many people these days struggling with the identity theft. And it's quite understandable considering the change in technology and other things. I think identity theft is pretty common. It'd be interesting to see how the identity theft can be avoided if we pay attention to basic things. Here are some of the ways you can avoid identity being stolen.

Identity Documents

Many sites ask you for the KYC documents. They are known as know your customer documents. And those documents are enough for most of the hackers and scammers. They can use that document and establish the identity in many places. So you should be careful on where you are sharing those documents. And your focus has to be on why any company wants such documents. Make sure to verify their requirement and don't share to any random company.

Photo Document

Any document with your photo on it is more unsafe to share online. Make sure to share only with the people or the company which is responsible. Most of the time you should only share with the government based organization. That should help you enough for most of the tasks. I think photo document can be really good in such case. I am not sure if there are cases where photo documents were morphed. But that is also another possibility too.

Identity protection services

There are some of the services online that can protect you from identity theft. And they can take care of some of the issues that may arise with the identity. This can keep things in under check. You can find out if anyone is using your identity. They can be good if your money is in large amount. Also there are some companies who can guide you in such case if this happens. US has the service called true identity that can protect in such case.

Shred Document Copies

In some of the cases you often need the document photocopy. And once used, you need a shreder to remove those copies off the system. Many government organization do this after thier use of the copies are no longer required. And this means shredding is a good idea for some of such people. Shredding also helps from some theives from taking over the documentation. That can be really good for many reasons. I'd say this can be one way you can make sure the documents are taken care of and you are not supposed to worry about what happens with it later.

Use Pseudoname

Using pseudoname or pen name for forum, and some of the other online activity is much better option. I think it'd be a good option in case if anyone wants to use the name to avoid being seen. That is something many people are doing. And this in turn many people are hoping to protect them from identity issues. This to some extent can work out just fine. I'd say use this for forum and other places.

These are some of the ways you can protect yourself from any identity theft. You have lot of other options and ways to manage the identity theft these days. Make sure you consider all of these options.

Nice advice you have here.
Reminds me of recent media reports that some Kenyan political parties registered individuals as members without the individuals' knowledge or consent. Another reason why we should jealously protect our personal information.

Thank you for these advices. Our personal information can be used against us if we arent careful.
Another way to protect us is being aware of Phishing websites, it presents itself as a legitimate website however in reality is a fake one looking for our information. If we find something suspicious we could use Phishtank to report it and also verify other users’ reported phishing sites.

Thanks for the advice. My husband also tells me that it is quite rampant over here that's why we always make a practice to shred important documents containing our address and complete name.
