How to find out if your side business is Profitable?

Postby skysnap » 20 Jan 2017, 06:16

Side business is one of the hardest hustle anyone can do. Most of thee side business involve some time effort and also money effort. But if we don't measure the success of the side business, it would be harder to sustain for long. Here are some ways with which you can find out if the business is profitable or not.

1. Number of Successful Sales

Though sales number shows us the profit. But we have to find out how many of units actually got sold. And how many units were not sold each month. We also have to find out if the service gets sold and what changes it required for selling it next time. You have to find out the number of sales happened for the services that you have sold. It would be easier for you to manage the future direciton of sales if you plan things this way. You have to also ignore the cancelled sales.

2. Revenue

Sales may show how much item or service is being sold to customer. However it can't be an indicator of the revenue. You have to find out how much actual money came to the bank. You can decide the rest of the actions based on the revenue numbers. Your profit and loss is under this account. So always pay attention to the revenue each month. That is the money that decides how much you should be earning in order to pay bills and to remain profitable.

3. Time Spent on Each Sale

We all ignore this metric. But the amount of time being spent on the sale or the product service, is what decides how much we are into the profit. We have to understand how much time to spend in such case to avoid getting into loss. Most of the small business always pay attention on this part because they want to optimize the time being spent. This is how they find out where to be investing more time and money. Find out this part and you can minimize the loss.

4. Number of Leads Per Month

At first you have to meet this target each month. Once you reach the target of number of leads that you can do to pay bills. The next target you have to focus on the number of leads to keep you sustained. So in order to grow your business, your focus has to be on the number where you learn how to improve these number of leads per month. If you can do that then surely you'd be able to help your business by long margin. So always pay attention to this metric.

5. Total Business Expenses

Running business is not a walk in the part. There are going to some expenses that are going to affect you and business. So pay attention to those expenses and then decide where you want to minimize the expense. If you can reduce the expenses then surely business would go ahead. If you fail to reduce the expenses then you loss is likely to increase. And this may not be a good for your business long term. So you have to watch out for anything in this metric that affects your business.

There are many other variables that are going to affect your business. Pay attention to these variables and you will understand where you are going to need to work in order to be profitable. That way you can decide how much work you have to do for business.

These are great thoughts and ideas. I especially liked that you listed time spent on each sale. It made me think of a shop in town from when I was a kid, in my hometown. The owner was such a nice woman, but she spent a lot of time talking to customers, letting them vent. She ended up having to sell her floral business... I think just she was there and a part time person she hired. Now the town it was in was small and mind you this wasn't a side hustle. But it seemed like a lot of people who went in there talked to her and didn't buy anything. Someone else owns that shop now and is doing well with it, they are using social media and setting up a delivery service.

This is true. Many good sellers if not focused on sales then it affects business. This part is difficult to handle too.

I have not created any side business at the moment, was thinking of selling handmade crafts. Do you think that the number of sales would increase during festive season?
