Minimalist Habits of Saving Money

Postby skysnap » 31 Oct 2016, 11:21

We all have desire to buy things. Sometimes it means we don't want to look broke. Sometimes we just want to please others. And other times we want to have it for our own personal desires. This emotional state to want things can affect our personal finance. Practicing minimalism at home can help with your finances for long term.

Here are some of the habits that can save you money.

Minimize Subscriptions: Some businesses are in profit only if there is a monthly subscription from customers. Similarly you're in loss of money only if you have recurring monthly expenses. So you have to find ways to cut such monthly expenses. You can stop the magazine subscriptions, and instead subscribe to free content online. Avoid cable TV that charges too high, you can focus on selective content from Netflix instead. Try to reduce every unnecessary monthly subscription.

Junk food : Many of us spend a lot of money into junk food. Though It's perfectly fine to spoil yourself every once in a while. But it's not a good practice to eat outside every weekend. You have to focus on what's good for your health. Food from such places often gains you weight and affect other parts of the body. For this reason you have to choose when to spend and how much to spend on such places. Also you have to also watch how much you consume such food. As that leads to your health concerns.

Entertainment : Do you need that iPad? Can you buy android tablet at low cost instead? Do you need kindle? Why not use the Kindle app in tablet or phone instead? Do you need satellite TV while keeping Netflix? We buy many things that we don't need to use in everyday life. We don't need apple products when other substitute products can do the job. You have to pay attention to which entertainment purchases are necessary. And you have to eliminate those that are not necessary.

Transport: Do you use vehicle for even 200 meters of distance? Consider walking up-to that place. By spending money on gas for small distance, you are wasting money unnecessarily on vehicle expense. This is where you have to control your expenses. This is one of the difficult part for saving the money. The reason being often people buy vehicles for ego than necessity. And they find it harder to control the expenses in that cases. Make sure you only use vehicle if it is necessary.

Clothing : We often buy things in impulse state. And this affects our spending habits. You have to find out ways to buy clothes only when you need them. You should avoid purchasing them if any mall display or ad is tempting you to buy it. This way expenses can be reduced. And you don't end up buying the clothes that you don't need. You can also consider buying from thrift shop. There are some of the online shops which do sell the clothing at cheaper cost. And you can consider that as an option too. This habit can save a lot of money at the end of the year.

Minimalist habits can help a lot during the early years of saving. This habit also keeps you from making unnecessary purchases. If you spend less and save more, you have to work less in later years of life.

Right now I spend less money than before, I always think twice before buying something new. I rarely went out for eat, eating at home is healthy and cheaper. I also stop buying magazines, but I still love it, but as I work in a library we receive some there and I end up reading it there as well as watching new films, I bring it from the library to watch at home for free.
All the points that you mentioned are important but for me the hardest one is substitute Apple products, I love my iPad and my iPhone :shh:

Since my income has been cut drastically these days I live a very frugal lifestyle. I probably do spend to much on junk food, I have trouble breaking this one. My clothing and entertainment budget is 0... I just buy clothes as I need them and try to avoid buying them, I hate shopping for clothes of any kind, even shoes. And I have been using the library as a source for reading if I can't buy a book I might want.

I have wasted a lot of money over the years buying things I want but don't really need. It's nice to have something we desire but only if we are going to use it often and make the most of it.

If I'm trying to tighten my belt I ask myself, 'Do I really need this?' Will I use it enough to justify the expense?' If the answer is yes I will go ahead and buy it. If I'm not sure I will think about it for a while and then maybe buy it, maybe not.

I just buy online to save money. But now a days i really think that if i need a particular item.. before iwas buying product because it wasan offer or there was an huge discount now i stopped to shop online. I prefer to buy from shop or malls..if i need in real i go to shop than seeking offers.

I think subscriptions and entertainment are the easiest ones to cut back. With all the stuff available online for free or cheap, it just makes sense to take advantage of this stuff. I don't get the paper or buy magazines any more when I can just as easily read online. I cancelled satellite TV long ago in exchange for Netflix.

As for clothing, I sometimes buy "gently used" items (or sometimes even new ones) at thrift shops.

Thanks for sharing your handy tips, @skysnap :) I already observe them, especially now because I have to really watch the pennies. The 'secret' is to live within your means, and not be so concerned with keeping up with the Joneses. I'm glad that in as much as I love to shop, I'm not a showy person and mainly buy what I really need, not so much what I want all the time like I used to.

I consider myself fairly frugal. There are a lot of things I can live without and I don't like being surrounded by too many material things.

I also enjoy having some money saved for something special.

The saving habit should be inculcated right from day one. No matter how much one earns a percentage should go towards saving.

True not spending on things also creates the problem.

To be honest I think I'm not good about saving money these days but once I was good at it, I miss those days when I was serious about making money and saving some.
